RE: winks

First, I would try to remove all the temp files.
In IE, click on tools-general-temp files-click-delete files and check the offline box, then OK.
Your virus program should have a log file, that you can open and see what is in there.
Your memory is too small for XP and MSTS and with extra routes.
Xp is large OS.
My advice to you is to get more ram, My new PC came with 256 megs.
I increased it to 768 megs, the best way to upgrade your PC.
When you delete the trash can, it just removes the files from sight.
I use a program called destroy-it, to remove it from mine, completely. Good luck Roger

RE: winks

No roandju. That isn't correct. The files are gone. Some files may remain but they aren't just removed from site.If that were the case I wouldn't have anymore space left on my hard drive. And others would have surely said something by now.Everytime I clean up my C: drive I regain space from files that were deleted. In other words when I empty my trash bin the files are gone and I gain more room on the C; drive.Claude Debnam NS Piedmont Division Raleigh EastWinXP – image 1

RE: winks

No, he is correct. The files are still there. Deleting them from the recycle bin simplly tells the OS to ignore them, and that they can be overwritten. This is how you can often recover deleted items. If it hasn't been overwritten yet, it's just sitting there and can be restored. You need utilities such as he mentions to actually delete them from your drive.-Jeff

RE: Now you see it now you don't

Hmmmmm, this is most perplexing: if, on the one hand, I delete a gig's worth of routes, I can see that (by checking before and after) by moving the mouse cursor over the drive C icon in "My Computer" that I have gained an extra gig; however, after two years of running windows XP on my laptop, I decided to reformat and re-install from scratch (system had become unstable), and then re-install the same amount of programs that had been running before. To my amazement I had gained an EXTRA 10 gigs--and Yes, I have a powerful utility that routinely clears ALL the junk from my system. So where did the extra 10 gigs plus come from?Mike

RE: Now you see it now you don't

System Restore has a habit of hogging up to 20% of hard drive space. As it becomes useless should a virus or worm get in your computer, you might as well disable it and recover the wasted space. Also, new low cost systems have a restore partition that stores a backup of all installed software. (You don't get the CDs any more.) If you don't burn a backup to CD, be sure you use high quality ones and don't lose them, Your'e only allowed one copy, your screwed if the hard drive dies.(Having fun getting an old Compaq up and running on Win98SE without the backup CDs. The guy aparrantly misplaced them. Have the original unlock code to use with a copy of 98SE, found drivers on line for the graphic card, monitor, and keyboard, but no sound drivers. It runs a lot faster using my old 40g drive which replaces a clunky Bigfoot drive and none of the accumulated garbage, spyware, and other crap that infected the Bigfoot drive. Amaizing how fast a Pentium 200 will go when there is no firewall or antivirus programs running in the background. It originally came with Office 97 Professional, it's missing - OUCH! Once I can locate something that will import Excel 97 files, Hoping that WordPerfect Office 2000 can import Excel files, will get my copy back Saturday, have Word and Access 97 already running, this machine will be strictly used for record keeping, no more Internet for this system. Floppy drive has croaked and no CD burning capability, But did sucuessfully install a driver for thunbnail drive and can transfer data that way.)I have also recovered extra space on a new laptops when I run check disk, defrag, and registry checker. (Mfg do mirror copies from a master disk.)SRV RonBTY, The 40g drive was my old portable backup. Win98SE installed on top of the 24G existing backup without formatting the drive and trashed part of the track - sector list in the process. Took half an hour to delete the corrupted folders using ScanDisk. Drive working fine now.

RE: how to improve your memory

Hi Carol,One question: how on Earth do you manage to run TS on 126 mb of RAM?500 mb RAM is not expensive, but I guess you don't know how to install it, so you will have to ask at the store for installation details.Mike

RE: winXP

re: post #10Ok start with Explorer (not Internet Explorer) and Tools / Folder Options / View / Show hidden files and folders turned on. Then go to C: drive (usually) / Documents and Settings / (insert user name here) / Local Settings / Temp. You can delete all the files in this Temp folder but don't delete the this "Temp" folder itself. You may also repeat this process for each user if your WinXP has more than one account. I didn't see the original post you refer to but I'm thinking this is what most likely was said.Changing topic: looks like some are confused or not clear on deleted files, and emptied from the recycle bin. Unless steps are taken to completely wipe/overwrite these files from your hard drive they can still present in whole or in part. WinXP has has released this file space, as you can check and see more free space is shown when you check hard drive free space. However, this type of deleted information lay dormant on the hard drive, is not recorded by WinXP, and exist until some other files overwite it. Hope that helps those that had questions on this some.Best,
Brian K.

RE: winXP

If you empty the Recycle Bin the disk space is freed. If you Restore the files they go back to where they were originally. Two quite different results. Holding down a Shift key will bypass the Recycle Bin step. Windows 101 so stay calm when someone tries to help you. BK

RE: winXP

I did all this and only gained 26.6 gig. I do not know how MSTS works on only 126 megs on PON9 and I get about 15 to 20 fps. I also have like two medal's of Honor games on here all the RT games and ton of other games that are big in the end it says I have 55 megabytes of ram left. I do know who to install ram I have installed many drives ram cards and etc with no problems on a old tired computer that sits and never gets used any more.

How does that help the lad?FWIW, if you are unable to be successful with XP then you are in a very distinct minority IMHO!Hell even Sniper can make it work! Chuck Schneider

It could be the poor memory management and other performance issues, then again it could just be the automation that you can only disable by hacking into the registry.I miss my old copy of 2000 Pro...WinXP – image 8"The F59PHI and Genesis are the lamest excuses for locomotives Amtrak has ever operated - accept it and move on. XP is known as windows 5.1The memory management is the same, the eye candy can slow it down.I run them both here.

WinXP – image 9

That's the weird thing - I've disabled most of this 'eye candy' because it's crap. All it does is slow the system down yet with a better machine the one with XP still lags. The other machine was equal in everything but two areas: slower processor and Windows 2000 Pro, yet it runs faster...hell, I do a more thorough job of optimizing this thing for performance than I did on the other machine.WinXP – image 10"The F59PHI and Genesis are the lamest excuses for locomotives Amtrak has ever operated - accept it and move on. Young Dude! When you empty the trash it's gone....More likely you have a ton of files/cookies/brownies and donuts in your internet cache and possibly even partial file fragments from application crashes....Go to Control Panel - Computer Management - Disk management and right click on Disk Management then run the disk cleanup wizard you will find there..... See how much that gets you back....

Actually, if you get down to brass tacks, a majority of the (once or twice) overwritten files can often be pulled back up with the correct software. Seems like I read somewhere back in the past it takes 4 - 5 overwrites before the material is completely obliterated. I guess a person would have to ask their local 'constable' about that one However, relevant to the situation as others have said, when deleted, Windows considers it free space until you restore (or resurrect in the case of overwritten files).RobertR ..
