Ron, I have had it for approximately 4 years now (this was swbell originally before yahooo got involved) and have had it down (fail) exactly twice in that amount of time. Both times it was one of the modem banks and was fixed shortly after the problem surfaced. However, I'm fixing to change to cable since the d/l rate around here is 3 times what I'm getting now for 2 dollars less. Kind of a hard one to turn down.RobertR .. ADF-M&RM at http://www.adfrr.com

I've got it for 2 years and loved it! Course, it does have downfall one in a while like server problem maybe once a year. I would say I always get connected and download speed is pretty good. Overall, I have no problems.Ken Plaza DSL – image 8

>Does anyone here have SBC/Yahoo DSL, and if so; any pros & cons or likes & dislikes. I personally have Verizon DSL, all of my friends and co-workers have SBC/Yahoo DSL from another county. My main complaint against SBC/Yahoo is that it is not a true 24/7 live connection. You have to login to the connection each time you login to your computer to use it.With my Verizon DSL it is true 24/7 always live connection and I never need to login to it.DSL – image 9

>24/7 live connection. You have to login to the connection
>each time you login to your computer to use it. Only if you use their software. If you have it connected to a firewall/router/NAT box (highly recommended) and it does the authentication, then the only time a login is necessary is if the connection was broken from the previous login. And they don't ever force a disconnect that I've seen. My only gripe with PPPoE is that I don't get the same IP back when it does drop.Edit: and I should say that when I'm saying "login" for the firewall/router/NAT box, I mean that in an automated sort of way. It doesn't require any intervention from the user(s), unless something's happened to cause it to no longer work, like a password change, or an upset modem that needs a power cycle.

RE: DSL

Thank you for the clarification. I have a friend who uses SBC/Yahoo and is frequently having connection problems, I suspect, related to the login. They don't use a router/NAT firewall, (I've been recommending that they do.) I'll approach them again with this and see if it helps with the problems they keep having.DSL – image 10

RE: DSL

Ron,I've had SBC for two years now, and it has been exactly as advertised: a solid 384K DSL connection that's a) never failed. b) what I expected (i.e. always hits the the marks I expected on the benchmarks of Broadband Reports, etc.). When you get comfortable with it, you may want to tweak you MTU's and such to get the best performance out of Enternet, but otherwise, no problems. When I was setting it up (do-it-yourself), their hot line answered right away, never put me on hold for more than 10 or 15 seconds, and were willing to stay on the line with me as long as I wanted. In short, I'm very satisfied. Sure, I could spend $20 more a month on even faster cable. But I'm poor, cheap and quite happy enough.PaulSDSL – image 11

Thanks much,guys;
your input has helped tremendously. I am finally taking the step from dial-up to something more efficient (sp), and in my area; DSL is more reasonable than cable.
Thanks again for your comments. Ron K of Rockford

RE: DSL

I live in a town/area that has it, $30 a month..
and was considering it.. SO, with 2 friends that DO have it, I borrowed each of their computers..
Friend one said, he was at a web site and it reported to him his connect speed was 260 somethingK or such.. he didnt know, so I logged onto the FL here and proceeded to start downloading a 20 meg route file.. THe DL speed shows starting at 22k per second.. this was on an XP computer, 2 gig processor and lots of ram..
After a minute it had dropped to about 9k per second and was still dropping.. so, go to my neighbor, and borrow HIS.. he was TOLD BY SBC that his connect speed would NOT exceed 25k per second. Why I dont know-they didnt explain, that what he was informed..
Logged in the FL again, tried the same file AGAIN.. and got 22+k per second. I let it go for 5 minutes and it did NOT vary.. so he was told the truth, and it was doing as he was told..
IF I was looking real hard, which I AM, I want to SEE IT, on someones computer IN THE AREA, before I would fork over the money.. if they say 256k per second, SHOW ME..
then, purchase..if it does like they say. shortly they are laying in a high speed cable line as part of the local cable company.. Cablenet, which is it seems across the country..
I am waiting to see what they come up with.. and for trivia, in my OLD AND SLOW 98SE computer with a v90 access by dialup, I get 4.2k per second.. about 15 meg an hour.. so, for the present, SBC is not worth the added expense, for now.

ashiva, most of the speed of dsl is dependent on a couple of things. First, how far you are from the modem bank and how many people are connected at the same time. The first can't be changed obviously, but the second problem, SBC seems to keep it down to a nominal amount in order to have the 34?k minimum or whatever it is advertised at for your area. Also, how fast the line speed is at the site you are connecting with. Train-Sim.com can fluctuate from 20kb to 240+kb in my experience, depending on how many people are trying to get that new route or whatever, so it is not a good reference to use.Up until I had some outside line trouble a couple of months ago, my d/l speed was actually in the 1mps range (with W98SE) which was about 3-4 times faster than the advertised minimum. However, I never did download and use the SBC/Yahoo software (when they joined together), so this may have had something to do with it.Since having the line trouble, my d/l has been slightly more than advertised, but nothing like it was. However, in reality, I don't think it was necessarily SBC's fault. I think I may have a 'dirty' line still inside the house which is cutting it back.RobertR .. ADF-M&RM at http://www.adfrr.com

Also ashiva the file library is not a good test unless you have a paid membership here as you get a limit on the speed here without the membership.

RE: DSL

do have a paid, and thats why I tested it using it..
also went outside the FL here and had same results..
here they will NOT sell you DSL unless you are within the 'so many foot' rule.. and both of the guys are within the range.
now, in BOTH tests connections, If I went to any web page, the speed of showing it up was IMO, FAST.. however, thats a 'blip' it went and got, and then waited for the next thing you needed.. but when you got into a dl situation, thats where it slowed down.
IF money was not a problem, there is a line here in town I observed one time, it downloaded a 45 meg file in 52 seconds-but, we cant go there, due to the price, but one could always dream..

RE: DSL

Thanks for this. To summarize the SBC Connection Manager sucks, (I can testify to this), you really need to purchase a router to function normally and problem free with their service. I personally use a router with my setup, this is a very good practice for all.It also mentions that the outsourced, offshore tech support they have is pretty worthless, (friendly but not technically capable of actually helping.) This is also in-line with what my friends have told me. DSL – image 20

I had to call them once because I suddenly started having sync problems with my modem, and had to pretend to jump through their hoops for an hour until they finally decided me worthy of issuing a trouble ticket to check on my line. The upshot of that whole situation was that I ended up with the phone number to call that actually connects to the technicians at the CO (The problem ended up being a router config error at the CO.)

RE: DSL

Dennis, I used to have the SBC software on the computer before this one.
You are right the connection manager was a big waste of time. However I have never had a problem with SBC for service on my DSL line. I have only had to use them 3 times since I have had DSL right from the beginning in Los Angeles. I have had the service folks answer all my questions & solve all my problems within 10 min.
The only exception was when they sent a tech. down to find the cause of complete shut down. When he opened the B box, about a quart of water poured out. To my surprise it only took 1/2 hour to replace the entire B box with a new one. About SBC, perhaps it depends where you live as to how the service is handled. My repair service is not offshore. As far as a router is concerned, I do not have a external router. I do not know if there is one installed in my Dell Gen 2.
I have an Intel Wired Network Adapter. Not sure what that does.
My Computer specs are in my profile

>I have an Intel Wired Network Adapter. Not sure what that
>does. If you had a router it would be an external device connected between your DSL modem and your PC. Your "Intel Wired Network Adapter" is Dell's way of saying your Ethernet Network Card, often simply called a 'NIC', using a wired connection as opposed to wireless. The NIC is your interface card connecting you to the network, in this case the Internet.DSL – image 23

Thanks for the reply, Dennis. You learn something new everyday. SBC has always been good to me. After paying $49.95 a month for the first year they dropped the price to 26.95 for 2 years. As I renewed my contract for this term they raised the rate by $5.00 a month & boosted my speed. My Computer specs are in my profile

It will start at 365 Kb and slowly drop to beween 98 to 104 Kb.
The ISP adverses 3000 d/l- 384u/l. The speed tests shows 2300 to 2500 Kb. Some of the download sites, I can get 325 to 375 Kb
If you are getting that speed on dsl, that's great.
I have looked T1 and T3, big bucks.
All ISP's have their good points and bad. And what I like about RR is that you do not have to install their software. The connection is made through their modem. It's a 24/7 unlimited.
It all is your decision, you know what you can aford and what you need. You will like the speed, if is dsl or cable. Roger

LAST EDITED ON Oct-07-04 AT 01:02 PM (EDT)

I have had PacBell/SBC Yahoo ADSL since Late 1999. I have a static IP and speeds consistently 1500-1500K download and 210-215K up. No connection software is needed. I live about 9000 feet from the Office switch. A test was run when the ADSL was installed that showed that at my location speeds up 3000K were possible, but Pacbell limits my connection to 1500K. I pay $26.95/month. It has been relatively trouble free over the past 5 years.I recently did a self-install of COMCAST High Speed (cable) Internet as they offered a 4000K connection where I reside. It is really sweet as in speed tests the actual download speeds run between 4500K-5000K which works out to 24MB/min. Upload averages between 310-315K. This cost of this connection will be about $50.00/month after my 3 month introduction of $43.00/month runs out the first of the year. There are contracts required and I can quit at any time.My System (WXP Pro SP) sits behind a LINK SYS Router/Firewall/VPN Router and I use the WXP Firewall.Edit to fix 5000K
