I think this was posted about a while ago, but I couldn't decide if multiple posts or digging up old threads was worse etiquette, so hope I guessed right....Just wanted to check and see who here, if anyone, is going to be at the Altoona Railfest Oct. 2nd and 3rd. Mrs. Fuzzums and I got our tickets in the mail a couple of weeks ago; we actually managed to get tickets for the cabin car on one of the excursions (4:30pm Saturday), I thought for sure they'd sell out in a hurry. Finally got a new AC adaptor/battery charger for the camera so I'm eager to get some new video. It'll be nice to see action around Tyrone for a change of pace from my Horseshoe/Gallitzin/Cresson ritual, but I'm sure I'll still wind up at the same old locations (the pizza place near the observation deck in Cresson makes some pretty good calzones, can't resist---must get a Guinness from the Yard Office saloon again too). It'd be nice to rendezvous with some MSTS brethren (and/or sisteren) and talk shop. Mr. F

RE: Railfest is upon us...

I'll be there both days, riding the cabin car at 11:30 am Sunday. Hoping to check out some new locations, including the brickyard crossing at Coburn. I'm hoping to avoid the curve itself this trip (although my dad really likes it up there, so I probably will have to go) because photos really aren't that great up there anymore, too many trees and too many people (this weekend especially). For some information on some better spots in the Altoona area see this website: http://www.railfanreading.com/Altoona_RF.htm

Ah, that link is what I've been looking for, looks like useful info. Wouldn't want to trespass by accident. As much as I like the Curve proper, I'm beginning to get the same way I think about finding alternate locations. I've been to the 8th Street bridge before a couple of times, you're right over the mouth of the yard with all the action plus you can see the deadlines of old freight equipment--full PRR keystones, NYC ovals, EL, RDG, and so on. The road I turned off to get to the bridge paralleled the shops, and I was able to park in a lot across the street and look through the fence at some of the locomotive deadlines--last time I was down there I saw U23Cs, U34CHs, old SWs, a GP30 in a no-logo "dip" scheme, a wreck-damaged B36-7, and a steam-era Reading tank car in full paint.See ya there, I'll be the chap in a tweed cap with an Asian babe in tow. Unfortunately, I'll be missing it this year to due some unpleasant circumstances. But hopefully make it next year.
