Greetings people,First off let me say that if you are going to suggest I switch to ATI, please don't bother to reply. I like Nvidia - period - end of subject. What I would like to know is: "Are the Nvidia 6800 GT boards worth the added $100 or so over the straight 6800 boards?"I'm in the process of selecting components for my Train Sim computer upgrade. It's going to be based on an AMD Athlon 64 3400 Clawhammer and an ASUS mobo with an Nvidia chipset and 1GB of Kingston low latency memory. I first thought I'd be happy with the Nvidia 6800 board but now I'm starting to wonder of I should go the extra C-note and spring for the GT version (I can't afford the Ultra). Toms Hardware doesn't seem to have any comparison of the various 6800 versions, nor does Nvidia's site have any specific figures either. This system will probably be the one I use for the next generation Train-Sim - and, while I'm not a real game nut, I think I will buy STALKER when it comes out.Any comments here would be greatly appreciated (as long as they don't say "GO ATI").Thanks and a great day to you all -Edited for typo - Dang it!Larry Steiner

>It's going to be based on an AMD Athlon 64 3400 SWEET! I don't know much about the 6800, but I'm assuming it's better than mine. I have an NVIDIA GeForce 5500 FX OC with 128MB of DDR SDRAM, and I'm happy with it, so you'll be happier with a 6800 (duh). >if you are going to suggest I switch to ATI, please don't bother to >reply. I like Nvidia - period - end of subject.Me too! I prefer AMD Athlons with NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards over Intel Pentium 4s using ATI Radeon video cards.

I'd say go for the GT. A coworker of mine just built a system very similar to your specs (except for using an A64 3000 and an MSI mobo) using a 6800GT and absolutely loves it. The only difference between the GT and the ultra is 50Mhz core clock (350 GT, 400 Ultra) and 100Mhz memory clock (500 GT, 600 Ultra, DDR of course). Both cards have 16 pipelines, where the base 6800 only has 12 (and still lower core/memory clock speeds). The card manufacturers might play a little loose with the core/memory speeds (in a good way), so it might be possible to find a GT card with Ultra memory, for example. All the reviews I've read point to the GT as the GeForce4 Ti4200 of its day, i.e. very very close to the top-of-the-line card's performance level but at considerably lower cost.Mr. F

I just recently bought the 6800gt oc and am very happy with it so far. OC stands for over clocked which my card is from the factory.

In my opinion, the $100 for the GT is worth it. There are a few fps differences between the 12 pipeline 6800nu and the 16 pipeline GT, but there are guides out there that will tell you how to mod the GT to an Ultra. Don't know if you'd want to take the risk in that, but that's one advantage to the GT over the vanilla. Also, for brand, BFG has always been the best maker for nvidia cards IMO.

GT is the best bang for the buck period. both the GT and ultra have the 16 pipes and it does make a lot of difference. Stay away from the 12 pipe versions.

BFG is the maker of the one I have.
