Memory Problems – image 1

LAST EDITED ON Sep-28-04 AT 00:16 AM (EDT)

I seem to have developed a problem that almost seems like a memory leak of some kind. I have 512 MB Ram. Normally, if I open task manager, under physical memory I see:Total 523,760
Available ~300,000 - 400,000
System Cache....I'm not sureHowever, for some reason tonight, once I start train simulator, the available number drops drastically, right now it says 87,660. As you might imagine, this makes it damn near impossible to play train simulator or do much else! After exiting train sim (actually, it normally boots me because there's not enough memory) the available memory stays low, around 70,000-85,000. After I reboot my computer my available memory returns to normal, but after firing up MSTS, boom, back down it goes. There aren't any programs running that aren't normally running, I really can't understand what would reduce my ram in this manner.Any ideas?Memory Problems – image 2Dave Reage - Beta Tester

RE: Memory Problems

Giday Dave,You forgot to mention your OS, if I had to guess I would say 98, but you probably have XP.
You are telling us what you see but not what you used to have.
You normally only get out of memory errors when your disk is full or you don't have a swap file.

Memory Problems – image 3

Sorry, I wrote that last email at around 1AM local time!I am running Windows XP.After doing a little bit of experimenting, it seems like a particular consist that is causing my available memory to plummet. When I run any other consist (that I have tested so far), my available memory remains at around 250,000. The consist that is causing trouble includes 45 intermodal cars, two CMP SD-75I's, and the new MLT SD60F. WHile the engines included in this consist are fairly graphic intensive, I have run more graphic intensive (and longer) trains in the past without problems.I checked my hard drive space and I only had about 1GB free on each of my hard drives (one HD has WIndows on it, the other has MSTS). After making some room, my WIndows drive has 3.11GB and my MSTS drive has 2.26GB free.I'll do some further testing to see if this has helped anything.Memory Problems – image 4Dave Reage - Beta Tester

They say size don't count but when it comes to hard drives, it sure doIf you want to defend an utterly hopeless state of affairs then you could DEFRAG!!!Mike

RE: Memory Problems

One more thing to look at is the swap file. How big is it? This amount of space will not be used for files either.
