Giday mate! Well...basically...they are basically the same locomotives, just one is with DC Current and one with AC.The major spotting difference is the HUGE AC Inverter banks on the port side of the beasts.Righto...Shane Palus took these photos. If you dont want me to have them up Shane...give me a email and ill get them removed. HE TOOK THE PHOTOS!!Differences between Dash 9 and AC4400CW ? – image 3Differences between Dash 9 and AC4400CW ? – image 4I hope this helps you out a bit mate!! Give us a yell if you require any more information about them? I'm more than willing to share with anyone. >Mike Forster<

RE: ..... Differences between Dash 9 and AC4400CW ???

In terms of performance, these two locomotives are quite different. Though they have essentially the same horsepower, the AC AC4400CW will generate a lot more tractive effort (pulling force) than a Dash 9. The Dash 9 will be able to generate less than 145,000 pounds of pull to start a train, and can maintain only about 105-109,000 pounds of continuous pull depending on the gearing. The AC4400CW can generate as much as 180,000 pounds of starting tractive effort in a heavy weight version, and will be able to continuously operate at over 145,000 pounds of pull.
Since the AC version offers so much more pulling ability, you may wonder why RRs would continue to purchase the DC version. First, the AC locomotives tend to be much more expensive than the DC versions. If the workload is not going to be heavy slow freights, the DC will handle the task just fine. In fact, the DC units seem to have better acceleration than the AC units. The AC units however, will dominate the unit coal train service.

Thanks Shane! Roderizator, As far as I remember....the first AC44's went to C&NW, UP and SP in 1994. Santa Fe and CSX were the first purchasers of the C44-9W's.>Mike Forster<

RE: ..... Differences between Dash 9 and AC4400CW ???

In terms of the cab, the AC4400CW is more technolgically advanced than the Dash9. All AC4400CW units have a fully digital cab while only the new Dash9s have a digital cab. Older Dash9s had analog desktop controls just like the Dash8s did.

Don't ask me, anything past the Dash-7 looks the same to me.CPs AC4400s are a bit unique though in that they have special trucks. I'm told it's for rough track and such, which would make sense since CP takes pretty bad care of its tracks last I heard. Those are steerable trucks. They can swivel/pivot/turn/whatever so that the front and back axle on each truck can turn in a curve. Useful for tight turns and it reduces wear on wheels and track.Joe LeMay

I figured. I have some pretty good closeups from when I lived on the Soo and it's pretty obvious that they're articulated.Differences between Dash 9 and AC4400CW ? – image 15"The F59PHI and Genesis are the lamest excuses for locomotives Amtrak has ever operated - accept it and move on. Actually, more than anything, steerable trucks are used to improve the traction of the locomotive, to reduce wheel wear, and to allow the locomotive to traverse tighter curves with less damage to the track structure (although the length remains a factor on curves). They keep the axles at right-angles to the rails. With rigid trucks, the first and third axles (on 3 axle trucks) wouldn't be at right-angles with the rails, causing some wheel slip as the wheels travel around the curve since the path of the inner wheel is shorter than the path of the outer wheel.DanAbsolute power corrupts absolutely.

Do Dash 9's and AC4400CW's sound the same? Just wondering for purposes of aliasing engine sounds.... Differences between Dash 9 and AC4400CW ? – image 18Dave Reage - Beta Tester

To my knowledge, they have the same type of engine, so I guess the sound would be pretty much the same... (the main differences are the alternator and AC traction motors)

They sound the same. Everything GE sounds the same - GE locomotives are generic in every sense of the word. Kind of sad, really... ahhhh...but that sound is REALLY terrific!!! U34CH's and ES44AC's are the only locos which I have heard and sound different. The ES44's have a GEVO-12 prime mover. The U34CH's...its hard to explain...but something with the HEP unit makes a high pitch noise when idling...and a low flat rumble when the loco notches up. :|>Mike Forster<

Generally, any freight GE upto and including the D9's/AC44's will sound pretty much the same as they all use the same prime mover...of course, there may be some slight differences when listening to some of the V12 or V8 equipped versions. Also, engines built around/post-1980 will sound a little more muffled, as new noise regs took effect around that time. The AC6K's and ES's will sound different, as they use different prime movers, and possibly different mufflers as well. The passenger locos will always sound somewhat different (particularly when it's a single unit), as the loco has to remain above a certain notch/RPM to maintain HEP for the coaches, just like EMD's F40's. That's why the U34CH was very high-pitched while idling...that's because the prime mover wasn't idling, but instead remained at a high RPM.DanAbsolute power corrupts absolutely.

Thanks for that information Dan!! I saw 2 of the BHP Iron Ore AC6000CW's on a train here in Australia...they sounded like giant microwave ovens. Very "unusual" indeed! >Mike Forster<
