RE: Windows 2000 & MSTS

The box that MSTS came in states that it will run on w2k.If XP had to be rebooted 10 times then you 'may' have hardware problems.I run MSTS on 2 machines, one with w2k and one with XP and I don't have to reboot either of them any more than once a month (they are turned on 24/7). The XP box is my main MSTS box, but they both get used for testing.

RE: Windows 2000 & MSTS

I feel for ya, friend called today trying to add a second hard drive to his XP, another person sent him 5 PAGES of instructions that he had to follow to add a D drive.. took something over 2 hours.. and this was just how to get it to actually SEE the drive, but to format it, etc. There was no 'install hardware' instructions involved.
its NOT the be all, end all software.. especially since CERT recomends that you DUMP IE, and use something else, due to other safety issues within the program.

If they didn't work, he does have problems with his system and should consult someone more knowledgeable about computers. The steps your listing, including use of the recovery disk and FDISK are totally unnecessary.Windows 2000 & MSTS – image 3

2 points, XP would NOT recognise the drive, AND the computer manufacturer supplied the instructions,
THEY are the ones stating that you muse Fdisk in DOS MODE-something that XP REALLY hates. and the tech at the manufacturer said THIS is the way you must do it. it worked..

new 120 G Maxtor EIDE-adding it to a 160 G currently in machine, also Maxtor>2) What brand is the computer?
E Machine (which is THE (IMO) BIG problem)>3) What decade was this PC first purchased?
june 04

see above..
not the drives fault but the OS and probably what E Machines did to alter it.. my guess. but it was XP Home. this in NO WAY, is a game machine- its used to get on the internet.
2.4 G Processor, and 1 g ram.

RE: Windows 2000 & MSTS

Now I know this story can't be true, or the tech support person who told you this is totally incompetent.I personally own two E-Machine Model T-3092, both purchased also in June this year for my children's use. Both came pre-installed with Windows XP Home edition and 160 Gb hard drives. To both machines I've added 120 Gb Maxtor drives as the second drives for storing their backup images to, using the exact same four simple steps I posted in my original post.Nice Try, I'm no longer buying it. Those are the easiest systems to upgrade and tweak. Great for the kids because their inexpensive.Windows 2000 & MSTS – image 5

> What is the advantage of leaving your computer on 24/7? As long as you can keep them cool, there is less stress on solid state electronics if they are left on.HDs and fans of course with moving parts aren't as happy, but with modern sealed bearing design, these components still have a long life expectancy running 24/7.I've run my machines 24/7 for years.

Do you have fans for the HD's? They get really hot if there's no fans. Some IBM machines have plastic thingys to hold HD in place and no fan, so the disk is almost burning hot after a couple of hours. It's no wonder that so many disk breaks down after 1-1,5 years of use (probably 24/5 on-hours). 6 disks of 7(broken during last 6 months) were Maxtor fireball Plus 40GB, so owners of those, beware...
Surprsingly over 100 computers work although the usage is the same for every machine. Maybe there was a bad batch of disks around early-2003?On the other hand, IBM says that their 60GXP and 120GXP should not be used more than 8 hours per day(!).

It was _supposed_ to be an upgrade so they say. Calling it one though, is essentially brutalizing the language. I've been in the PC biz since '79 and my experience is that XP is not as stable as 2K and that the overhead in manhours to maintain XP is far highr the for 2K. And for all this you get what, a new GUI and 17 new security holes? We just had to roll the service pack off trwo of our PCs until we can figure out why the service pack installation cases some of our non M$ software to cease to function correctly.Brad Meyer

Funny, I read 32 holes in IE alone, that Service Pack 2 did not touch.
and why it stops the 'non MS software'? its NOT MS software.. you arent supposed to USE NON MS software. (LOL)
and FWIW, I get conflicting stories but you 'should reboot' XP and this is where the story differs, AT LEAST every week, to a maximum of 21 days, 'just because'.
Server software will not run good after 21 days in most cases, and forces a reboot, so I read in the trade magazines.

My own server is only rebooted when crappy M$ software forces me to.

It is well documented that Windows XP is the most stable OS yet released by Microsoft, it's core is Windows 2000 based so to say it's less stable than Windows 2000 is self contradictory.Harder to maintain, hardly. Again your experience contrasts sharply with everyone else's including whats been published in the trade. Maybe you've just had a long run of very bad luck?Windows 2000 & MSTS – image 13

Certainly the published sources have, but then again, who publishes the sources . . .W2K and WXP are both built on NT technology -- 2k is NT 5.0 and XP is NT 6.0. Methinks you've been reading the hype.No harder to maintain? You have not, it would seem, had to do a strip and reload of XP or you wouldn't talk such foolishness. Also, it would seem you have had little chance to deal with legacy hardware drivers running under XP.I've actually had a run of pretty good luck (although to tell the truth I don't think luck has much to do with it) -- my equipment delivers that which my employers require at the time and in the volume that they require it to be delivered. That is the true measure of the worth of a computer installation.

I can't say the same for many of the other OS's I've worked with. Not to hard to for me to maintain when it never breaks. I work in the healthcare industry, I know all about using dinasour software and equipment. That's why I advocate Windows XP, reliabilty and security. It just works when the others don't.I'm a strong supporter of actually giving users the hardware and software they actually need to be productive in their jobs. I've seen too many IS groups that enforce strict adherence to obsolete standards, except for their own systems of course. The theory seems to be better to guarantee job security by constantly fixing whats broken, rather than act pro-actively and avoid the problems all together.Windows 2000 & MSTS – image 14
