IIRC a forth replacement made it over here as I think the Boone & Scenic Vally out in Iowa was the one that had their first SY go to the bottom(Calling Bob Ballard,Calling Bob Ballard)Gary S

LAST EDITED ON Sep-20-04 AT 06:43 PM (EDT)

Thanks Gary!I was gonna say about it, but I forgot what RR it went to (and where that even was) so, I forgot to put in anyhting about them sending the replacement...The original three were to go to B&SV, Knox & Kane (How Sloan Cornell got enough money for a new Steamer in 1988 is beyond me), and some railline in Conneticut. The SY wasn't built in a factory which was approved by the Conneticut Boiler Guy, so, they had to sell it to the NYSW...Which I hear still uses it!The K&K (which the full line name is the Knox, Kane & Kinzua....KKK just doesn't look good on Passenger cars though...) was operating Ole 58 until last year when she went down for Boiler maintence, and shrotly after being released was down for Boiler insepction....and then a month after that complying with a new PA law she went down for Re-tubing...and then the Kinzua Bridge collapsed, so, they now run their Ex-WM GP9M or the Ex-??? RS11u. In November they have a run from Marianville to Clarion, which is rumored to be the new route of regular excursions, since they can't cross the bridge to the return wye anymore. Supposedly due to Finnancial strain (not difficulties...yet) the K&K is open for Special trips, and Private Equipment runs....Now if I could JUST get $25,000 for that GP10.....

"Knox, Kane & Kinzua....KKK just doesn't look good on Passenger cars though..."Well, they COULD paint the cars all-white....but it would be in incredibly poor taste!JBD

The Connecticut railroad in question was the Valley Railroad Company. I'm not aware there were any problems with State inspection, or it never would have run there in the first place. There is a story that the VRR, or some of the principals involved in it, had the idea to become the importer of these locomotives and the parts (air compressors and so forth) made by the same works in China. The market ultimately did not materialise, and they cut their losses. -Phil

Actually, the first Chinese Mike that Walt Rich bought for his NYSW ended up at the bottom of the Pacific. That's what led to the used Mike purchase.

RE: Tonight on the history channel...

It was a pretty interesting show. A couple 2-2-2s that have been sitting on the ocean bottom for 150 years. From valve gear and other parts, they put the build date between 1850 and 1855. Historians were only aware of 6, 2-2-2s being made. These make 8.There was previously only 1 still in existance. A loco called the Pioneer that is currently stored in Bethlehem PA, waiting to be an exhibit in a transportation museum sponsored by the Smithsonian. The Pioneer is one of the Smithsonians most prized possessions. The Pioneer however was much smaller than these two locos. Historians didn't even know there were any 2-2-2s built that large. They say that if these locos would have reached their destination, (most likely the Cumberland RR) they may have changed railroad history. There is another train show on tonight at 10PM ET/PT. (also on the history channel) Wild West Tech, Train Tech. All about Steam in the wild west. -Jeff

RE: Tonight on the history channel...

I was fortunate enough to spot this in the TV listings and it really turned out to be a fascinating show. Amazing that you'd find two steam locomotives like that, but not just any run of the mill locomotives but two truly rare and very early models. Well worth watching next time it comes on.
