I can't remember what mile post it was BUT it was about 8 years ago
just south of Boston Bar B.C., there was a wash out on the CN line
rails being welded rail never broke. The north bound crew hit the wash out and they lost there lives the 2 SD50 or SD60 i can't remember were just left there and cemented in place that was a very bad one.Steve

The one I remember was at Canoe River on the CN Blue River Susdivision. A troop train coming home from WWII never made to to the West Coast. I don't remember the casualty count, but it was devistating to the families here. A long time ago, but still remembered.Chuck F.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-27-04 AT 06:24 AM (EST)

It seems like the initial reports that everyone got a hold of were greatly exaggerated (3-5,000 dead). I think North Korea did finally admit to the true scope of the crash, and it turned out to be two cars of explosives being switched on a siding, not two entire trains coming together. The cars were rickety and they were mishandled, causing the explosion. Actual death toll was said to be closer to 200-300, but still lots of buildings wiped out.Worst in fatalities I think was the Modane, France troop train crash in 1917. The cars were way overloaded (less than half with air brakes) and the lone engine was way over its rated tonnage. The engineer refused to move the train knowing all this, but was forced to do so at gunpoint by the ranking officer on the scene! Sure enough the train ran away downgrade, the brakes either burned off or set fire to the coaches, and the whole consist reportedly left the tracks at ~90mph. The "official" body count was 543, but so many bodies were either unidentifiable or completely reduced to ashes that some put the actual toll closer to 900-1,000. Mr. F

Hi Chuck
About the Canoe River wreck, it took place as you noted at Canoe River, B.C. (mile 82) on the Albreda Sub., about 50 miles east of Blue River. The troop train, heading to Vancouver with soldiers going to serve in the Korean war collided with an eastward passenger train on November 21, 1950. There were no fatalities on the passenger train, but on the troop train, 17 members of the 2nd Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery lost their lives. The reason the accident happened was that the dispatcher had set up a meet at Canoe River, and the troop train was required to take the siding at the meet. Tragically, the train crew didn't receive the meet order from the train-order operator at Redpass Junction, about 40 miles east of Canoe River. This was all train order territory, with no block signals or radios, so the westward train didn't have a clue of the meet until they saw headlight of the other train. The only saving grace in the whole thing was the eastward train did have the meet order, so they were slowing down as they would have to stop at the east siding switch, which probably saved some lives. The lessons learned in this trajedy brought about changes in the next rule book that came out. I heard the story of the wreck when I was a little boy from my dad, who was the midnight train-order operator at Blue River at the time. I've always been grateful that he wasn't the one that made the mistake of missing the order. It would be an awful thing to have to live with. I could tell he felt terrible for his brother operator, as anyone can make mistakes, sometimes with drastic consequences. Anyway that's the very abreviated story. Thanks for bringing it up, Chuck. cheers'
Ernie

I think that the pure stupidness of UP derailing the SD70ACe's in Colorodo was bad (for EMD at least)I know of crashes around here on the Housatonic where trains fall into the river or into ponds. That seems purdy bad.-Dave

The Weyauwega, Wisconsin freight train deraiment is a good one that I can remember. Several tankers carrying (if I remember) propane derailed and one exploded and some of the others were leaking. No fatalaties but the town was evacuated for 19 days.

RE: Worst Railroad Crashes/Derailments?

A couple of the worst ones here in the USA that I can think of...The Sunset Limited that hit the misaligned bridge near Mobile, Alabama about ten (?) years ago.The Central Railroad of New Jersey incident in1958 in which two GP7's and their train of coaches went through anopen drawbridge in the NY City area, 48 people died in that one. I believe the engineer had a heart attack, the fireman couldn't see around the engine's hood to see a signal warning the train of the impending open drawbridge, and when he saw the bridge open, noticed the engineer slumped over right onto the deadman pedal and it was too late to do anything.

An interesting bit of trivia about the CNJ wreck from "Darkest Hours" by Jay Nash (not entirely about train wrecks, but a good historical reference on disasters in general)--a businessman, Lloyd Nelson, who was one of the survivors from the third coach was also a survivor of the Woodbridge, NJ wreck on the PRR in 1951 that killed 84 people. In both cases he walked away (or swam in the case of the CNJ wreck) with only minor injuries. Talk about a charmed life...Does anyone know if they came to an official conclusion of the cause of that wreck? According to the book (was c.1976 so things may have changed since) the investigators had a theory that both the engineer and the fireman had been incapacitated before the crash. They did know that the fireman was dead before the train hit the water, and the engineer had a heart condition while the fireman suffered from high blood pressure. The theory was that the engineer did have a mild attack before the crash, and the fireman saw this and it so undid him that he collapsed. The engineer then recovered enough to see what was about to happen but too late to do anything...speed recorders said the train left the bridge at 58mph, which the investigators explained as the wheels spinning in midair. Edit--those two Geeps survived by the way (not sure about the coaches!). The CNJ rebuilt them as Nos. 1526 and 1531, model GP9m.Mr. F

>Forgot about that CNJ one. There's also been huge loss of
>life in the Middle East and India on the rails. That's what happens when you get more people hanging off the outside of the train then are actually inside the coaches I suppose....No fatalities, but a couple of wrecks from my childhood in Philadelphia in the late 70s stand out, maybe someone else remembers. One was a 3-way collision (!) between 3 SEPTA trains, injuries numbered in the low 500s. First train stopped at a signal, second train stopped behind it as it should have, third one plowed into the first two hard enough to knock cars off the tracks...I seem to remember some photos in the paper of the ends of the cars mangled together like stainless-steel spaghetti. The other one was a B&O wreck in Collingdale, the engineer got away with a broken back. Vandals broke a lock on a siding switch, lined the switch, and knocked out the signal. The engines plowed through the end of the siding (fairly populated area) and piled up the cars behind. It wouldn't have been so bad except four loaded tank cars derailed, two with epoxy and two with sulfuric acid. They had to evacuate ~3000 people for a day or two while cleaning up. When people were allowed back my dad took me out to the scene to watch the cleanup; they were re-railing cars and salvaging cargo while hazmat still was working on diluting a large pool of the acid with firehoses. The strongest memory I have is the smell of that acid....the whole area smelled like all of South Philadelphia had, um, how shall I put this lightly..."cut the cheese".

Well the Santa Fe train on Tehachapi where the engineer went past a green signal and then the dispatcher asks "What color was the signal you just passed?" The engineer says green eventhough on the dipatchers board it was red. The dispatcher then tells the engineer to dump the air but its too late. As they come around the corner there is the flashing FRED from the back of the train in front of them. The conductor was walking along the side of the engine and the engine made a V shape and the conductor and engineer lost their lives.
After a party a drunk engineer and conductor get helped up on a train in Needles and then somehow manage to get the train up to 50 mph. They smash into the train infront of them killing the brakeman in the caboose and almost killing the men in the engine.
A Santa Fe train in Barstow has a problem getting air into the cars. So by the time they decide to let this train loose it was very late. They stop up at Summit and do an air test after that about the 6th car had an air hose too long. So when they where coming down Cajon the hose snapped and the train went out of control. It piled up on a curve and there was a big fireball. A matenince crew was in the area and was rushing down to help. As they where coming the train piled up and they radioed that they better get lots of stuff up there. The brakeman and conductor jumped from the train and lost their lives the engineer rode it out and was able to stay alive.
A early morning Santa Fe Mixed frieght on the Pasadena Sub. was coming into the siding. The engineer and conductor fell asleep and on the other side of the siding was a Wig-Wag. So the engineer must have had the window open cause he woke up from the sound and said "Oh Sh*t". About that time he looks up and the 889 train is coming around the curve and I dont think any of them made it out of that one.-MattATSF GP60M #104 works on the local in Flagstaff, AZ.

A Southern Pacific train descending Cajon Pass was overloaded and became a runaway around Blue Cut. Four locos and about 80 hoppers
doing about 120 mph piled up on 4 wood frame houses on Duffy street. The conductor and head brakeman died along with 2 boys that were in one of the houses. The engineer lived but was messed up pretty bad. A petroleum pipline that runs along the right of way was shut down and "checked for damaged". The following Monday when they turned on the pipeline, it broke and shot aviation fuel 150 ft in the air. Didn't take very long to ignite and Killed 2 or 3 more and destroyed a few more houses.

The accident you are referring to is the Eschede wreck in Northern Germany. As you stated correctly, the part of the wheel which actually runs on the track had separated from the wheel base due to fatigue. See the full story at http://danger-ahead.railfan.net/features/eschede.htmThere are a couple more short reports on that site from all over places, and covering almost all eras of rail ops, usually with a short but concise explanation of "what went wrong". Worst Railroad Crashes/Derailments? – image 19

"November 1, 1918. Due to a wildcat strike of BRT (Brooklyn Rapid Transit, the predecessor company to the BMT) motormen, service was being operated by tower operators and other supervisory personnel. One such substitute operator was Anthony Luciano (aka Anthony Lewis), who was operating an evening rush hour Brighton Line train from Park Row to Coney Island. He was an inexperienced operator, and unfamiliar with the Brighton Line as well. At the junction of the Fulton Street El and the Brighton Line at Franklin Avenue, he did not notice that the signal was set for straight ahead, and sped across the junction on Fulton Street. Realizing the error, he then backed up to the junction, and took his proper turn. Trying to make up time, he sped down the incline at such speed that he missed his stop at the Consumer's Park station. Due to the construction of the new subway connection at Prospect Park, the tracks now ducked into subway tunnel, which curved sharply right then left to enter the station. The curve had a speed limit of 6 MPH. Witnesses claim the train was going at least 30 MPH as it entered the tunnel. The train derailed on the curve, the wooden cars banged against the tunnel walls, and splintered to pieces. The rear cars plowed into the cars ahead of them. In all, 97 people were killed, and over 100 were injured. This was by far the worst disaster ever to occur on the New York subway system, and the second worst railroad wreck to occur in the USA. The legal aftermath of the accident ultimatly bankrupted the BRT and it was reorganized in 1923 as the BMT. And Malbone Street, under which the wreck occurred, was renamed to Empire Boulevard, although a one block section still bears the name."

You are forgetting one last thing the Malbone Street wreck caused: wooden cars are not allowed to carry passengers in subway tunnels. This is why the gate cars are towed behind the Arnines on fan trips. Not only was that the worst disaster on the New York Subway, it was the worst rapid transit disaster ever, worldwide. The line today is known as the Franklin Avenue Shuttle, running between Franklin/Fulton and Prospect Park. It runs with a pair of 2 car R68 sets, with a third set laying up on the southbound local track at Prospect Park: the same track on which the ill fated Brighton Beach Local-Express was supposed to arrive. Regular trains rarely use the Malbone Street tunnel: instead southbound trains switch over to the northbound track and pull in there.BTW: When the train derailed, it uprooted the third rail, shorting out the track. When BRT people saw this, they thought it was union workers trying to sabatoge the line, so they turned the juice back on. Many people survived the wreck, only to be electrocuted on the third rail. When the third rail finally shorted out again, the BRT figured out that there was something terribly wrong. The train was going at about 45 MPH.

Someone mentioned at NYCTBA that it wouldn't make a difference if the wooden cars 12-6'd* outside and off the El, it wouldn't make a difference. After hearing that the trip on the 19th would be a NYTM trip with no photo stops, I don't think it would be that special a trip to ride, railfan-wise. $50 is going over the top.*Radio code for derailment

The rearend collision at Raymond Virginia in the 1800s when one conductor got in a hurry and caused his train to rear end another. Most of the death and injury was caused by the wooden coaches telescoping.

Wasnt there one on Conrail back in the 1970's, when the driver was on drugs/alcohol and slamed the light engines into an Amtrak train? I was reading about it in Trains Magazine years ago.>Mike Forster<

I think you are talking about the Chase MD accident that I posted before. I think it was that Conrail pulled in front of Amtrak and Amtrak rear ended the engines at 100 plus.AEM7AC 920

Remember the wreck of MARC P286 and PO29?I think it occured on the 17th, but it was Febuary 1996, Georgetown Jct MD.Ricky Orr was the engineer on a reverse commute MARC train comming from Martinsburg in the evening. He got an approach signal at Kensington I belive, but what ever signal it was, it was the one ahead of Georgetown Jct.He was going east on two, and was going to stop at Gerogetown Jct to let the westbound Amtrak Capital Limited cross over from west on two, to west on one.One track was tied up because of the westbound CSX K951 rock runner.Ricky Orr forgot about his approach signal, and came around the curve at Georgetown Jct at 60pmh to see the headlights of PO29 infron of himHere is a diagram of G-Town Jct. It explains alot-Jeffrey

RE: Worst Railroad Crashes/Derailments?

I may be way off on this but when we were in Scotland I was told that the Tay bridge disaster was on of the greatest disasters in British rail history. Maybe someone could elaborate. The old pilings can still be seen.

RE: Worst Railroad Crashes/Derailments?

There are books and videos on this subject. There was the horrific AT&SF RDC crash at Redondo Jct. in the 50's, which ended RDC service on the Surf line. The City of SF crash due to sabotage in Nevada in about 1940, the saboteurs were never caught. Pretty much all the worst crashes occured in the 1800's in the wooden car era.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-03-04 AT 06:57 AM (EDT)

The Tay bridge collapsed in a gale under the weight of a passing express. The entire train disappeared into the water, no survivors. I think the only way they came up with a body count (about 80) was they checked manifests to see how many were supposed to be on board.Mr. F

The CP one... Lead loco was 5799... An SD40-2. There were two leased units trailing. Then from what it looks like, about 30 cars piled up. All three engines were completly smashed. The stuff also rolled down a bank.-----MechaMoose-----

Trains mag a while back had a feature article on a crash of The Chief in the early 50's in New Mexico, and did anyone mention Casey Jones?
