Apr-06-01, 11:05 AM (EST) "How long does it take to complete a typical track in MSTS?" Hi,
I know some of the tracks are quite long in Train Simulator (72 miles, etc.), but how long does it take to complete a run like this from start to finish, obeying all rules, signalling, etc.Mark Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Changing the subject,My name is Jeremy Jackson, and I am an avid flightsim user and even CEO of 2 virtual airlnes, and I stumbled upon train-sim.com.It is very interesting to see a lot of the respected members of the flightsim community such as Chris Trott and myself, and former flightsim users such as Nels Anderson over on the train sim forums not just here, but on the other sites as well.In fact,I will probably start my own virtual passenger train line(VTL)or whatever you want to call it,probably opening in August or something, and it will be based on a REAL WORLD CARRIER,just like my 2 VA's.Probaly Amtrak or some european carrier.Pilots from PSA and US Airways 2001 are automattically registered as piots(or conducters or whatever the train drivers are called)on the new VTL.I NEED FEEDBACK ON THIS,so e-mail me at NYJAX2@aol.com!!!Regards,

One consideration is that it will be a while before we have much in the way of routes to run on. It's not like FS2000 where every airport in the world comes included with the product. You could simulate Amtrak, but until there's some 3rd party routes you'd only be able to run from Philadelphia to Washington DC. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Just FYI, most folks have been calling them VRs, or Virtual Railways/Railroads (whichever you prefer). I'll be interested in joining one, perhaps, once I see what they offer over and above the activities in MSTS itself.Regards,

Apr-08-01, 02:34 PM (EST) 2. "RE: How long does it take to complete a typical track in MSTS?" I don't think there is a "typical track"!There are so many options there's really no answer to this. The available routes vary in length. The types of trains you can run vary too, which means the possible speed varies. A freight may only run at 20 mph for long distances, while a passenger train can run much faster (the Acela which comes with the sim is meant to run at 150 mph). A diesel powered passenger train might run in the 60-70 mph range. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

There is no such thing as a normal track because they are all so different. Some are 50miles long, some 200miles long, some 10 miles,it's just so different. As for the VTL,virtual airlines faced the same challenge in the early 90's when there were only a few major airports available with Flight Sim 4 and Flight Sim 5.But they still succeded, and my new organiation will too.Just wait and see.-Jeremy Jackson Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Even though it may be difficult to operate a Virtual Amtrack, or sometjing on a similar scale, it shouldn't be too difficult to operate a virtual commutter operation, such as Toronto's Go Transit etc..Dave Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

And I seem to recall something official (on the MSTS site, perhaps?) that said that activities would range from 15 minutes to 2 hours. As a side note, I found that to be interesting, especially as the run over Marias Pass was said to take 6 hours, which would mean that doing the whole run at one sitting wouldn't be one of the activities. I'll certainly want to run the full length of each line, one way or another, and preferably in the highest mode of realism, i.e. Marias Pass with 4 Dash-9's and 120 loaded grain cars, etc. Of course, we have yet to see the product to see what's really there... <sigh>.Dave Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
