LAST EDITED ON Aug-16-04 AT 00:22 AM (EST)

I agree Chris, and the topic name pretty much sums up what those people are! CP would probably get blamed for their death or injury if the train got the Medium to Clear and highballed outta town. Even tho the Xing is 12 cars down and there is that underpass in town also. I have a shot of some guy driving around the gates, good thing 6.3 megapixels is a high enough resoulution to get a nice clear view of his plates!!! Soon to be submitted to the Brechin Ontario OPP division. If it got challenged in court im sure the train crew of CN 112 or my father(who was there with me) could testify that they did infact run the gates. I even have the exact time to the second the photo was taken Rob

That's bad enough, but I really shake my head when I see people crawling UNDER the cars to cross the tracks. I really hope their life insurance is paid up. cheers,

>CP would probably get blamed for their death or injury if the train got the Medium to Clear and highballed outta town. Even tho the Xing is 12 cars down and there is that underpass in town also. Rob I won't think that CP would get blamed for their death or injury because:
1. Those two people are trespassing on railway property
2. There is a perfectly good railway crossing 12 cars (130 some odd feet) down from them.
3. They don't understand what the meaning of those signs in which they total ignore (Private Property No Trespassing)
4. Those two people don't care about their own personal safety until something happens to themI see this everyday and I'm totally disgusted by it, walking the tracks whenever a train is coming sometimes they have their walkmans on too, and then you got those punk wannabe gangsters that cause more trouble to the railroad then anyone else by jumping on trains or tryin to beat the train at a crossing. It's sad that CP has been laying off alot of railway police and not even hiring them to help patrol areas that are needed, I know that there are some areas that are more dangerous than others (and I think Oshawa is the worst with punks damaging equipment and property from what I heard from the crews). Well thats my 0.02¢'s on it.Mike

That's great Rob!I wonder if any railroads have experimented with a type of "red light" camera, similar to the ones that take photo's of people license plates when they try to run a red light, it could take pictures of cars that run railway gates while they are in operation. There is a cost associated with this of course, but perhaps it could be put in place at particularily troublesome crossings. It would be beneficial to the railways because it could disprove any liability on their part for level crossing incidents. It would likely require new legislation to make them legal.Retards! – image 11Dave Reage - Beta Tester

I don't think it is really appropriate to use that terminology. Don't forget the general public is not as well educated about trains and the dangers that surround them. We, as railway enthusiasts, tend to recognize the dangers associated with crossing railway equipment. These dangers may not be apparent to the general public. The same goes for public crossing.I try to explain my railway job to friends and family and they have no idea how the industry works. However, I don't even have to explain it on this or any other railway forum.Chris, perhaps you can use a bit more maturity can the next time you consider what to write as a subject line for a thread. Hello Chris. I just so happen to be offended by the title of your topic. It is derogatory to people with disabilities, whom of which cannot help themselves from having. Such as my sister.I would have no problem with calling them "idiots" or "dumba$$e$", or what have you. Now, I'm sure many of you are reading this thinking I'm a sissy (or slightly other things having to do with female genetailia) I have to put up with alot of crap from alot of intolerant bungholes and now this comming from a person whom I enjoy their repaints, and posts. Dude, you should really know better.Sorry if this ruined your day, it surely ruined mine.

RE: Retards!!!

-Andrewpickle and FURX- What are your problems? I find nothing wrong with what Chris said. The general public is ignorant about trains, agreed, but why defend them when they are doing something stupid? It is that kind of attitude that leads to railways being sued by these kind of people when there is an incident and the railway looses! A FURX, I am truly sorry to hear your sister has a disability. However, if you are going to freak out everytime you hear/read the word "retard" you need to learn how to ignore that! If your day was "ruined" by reading the word "retard" I feel sorry for you! The word is in the dictionary, and is used even by the railroad the describe braking mechanisms. I'll be the first to agree with you it was used out of context. But for you the only way the derogatory meaning will never go away is if you ignore it and don't label your sister yourself, but think of her as the beautiful person she is.

Brandon,I work for a railway, I have talked to people climbing through the trains I've been working on. What do you think their reaction would be if I ran up to them and yelled "What are you doing you retard!!" Do you think that would really help matters? Approaching these people calmly and speaking to them of the dangers is more helpful than yelling at them and handing them a ticket for tresspassing. My attitude does not "..lead to railways being sued..." I believe it encourages respect for the equipment by the public, and fosters a relationship between the community and the railway. Leading to a safer environment for everyone.I don't want to walk down a train to cut in the air or put on a handbrake to find someone cut in half lying on the tracks dying. I'm sure you wouldn't either.Andrew PickellBC Rail Squamish Subdivision for MSTSRetards! – image 17

I like to live my life the way I do, I know disabled people and would never do that.I also forgot to mention the train was still slowly pulling up to the eastend.Oh, and I have video footage of people climbing on a manned locomotive in the siding while a train was passing beside at 55mph.Anywase, everyone... Those people are ignorant, not retarded, two very different conditions. People become offended by moves which are inappropriate, no one is picking on you, just a subject line that could have been stated more tactfully. Retards! – image 20

I'm not on your case dude, I'm saying next time be careful about the context in which you say something like that. Yeah, some people take things over the line with stuff people say, but I belive that this was NOT within the bounds of good taste. Calling some person's action 'retarded'......just dosen't float well with me, .....remember, there are other things you could have said to express these people's stupidity.....that's what I'm saying.-Jeffrey

RE: Retards!!!

Well I think we are allowed to some point to voice our opinions. I don't believe anyone intentionally tryies to "stir the pot".
Andrew - My first impression of your first comment was as if you are defending people who don't know any better when I comes to trespassing on railway property. Like it is not their fault, so it must the railways fault. I just hate hearing about people/companies getting sued when they, (in my opinion, such as the railway) are not at fault - thats all. Trespassing is a very serious thing on railway property, most people I talk to really don't care about railway safety and don't have the time learn some common sense.

Canada's law's are some what different then the United States. In the US, if you slip and fall on someones property and break your bone, you can sue.Thats usually not the case up here.So railways are prolly strict about that, for the reason I just said. Its not hard to trip over a rail and bash your face. Heck, carelessness it could happen on the grove in the crossing!Chris Wilson

Amazing how many loopholes there are in the laws here in america. Someone who breaks into your house, grabs some of your valuables and trips down the front porch can sue! how rediculous. well i won't get started because i could go on for hours and i don't feel like creating arguments.

Hey
Nice shot of that BNSF train. Ive seen that one happen several time in Western Springs and in Berwyn where i used to work. My favorite was when a mom and daughter started across right after a lefthanded running westbound went out of cicero and an eastbound stacker doin about 40 was on the middle track. walked right out not looking either way, if myself and another guy hadnt shouted get the **** out of the way, those two wouldve been hit, there is no doubt in my mind.
Its one thing for one person to do it, but another to put one's kid in danger like that. Why cant people wait 3 miuntes??Kevin V.

My 10 cents:Matt, That was a good one *lol* but really, he isn't even looking. People are just ignorent, to a certain extent. The're prolly thinking 'Damn train takes *2* whole minutes to get over the crossing, and I left my house with exactly 3 seconds to spare' Sean is exactly right. We can't do nothing without rushing around. And im guilty too. I get up exactly 15 minutes (5:45) before I have to be outside for my school bus on school days. I recently took a trip to Lake George, NY and my ears were practically ringing to the sounds of horns because people weren't patiant enough to let people think on which way to turn or which lane to be in. Its sad, really.Chris, Nice shots there man those guys are dumba$$e$ as FURX said, and it is like the stupidest things that someone could do would be to go in between those cars. But Its not uncommon. On the shortline I live along (The Housatonic Railroad) there are prolly 2-3 trains a day at the most. But I know a kid (who will remain nameless) who rides his dirt bike up and down the tracks at like 50 mph. Across an overpass! imagine hitting a train doing about 25 mph (thats the speed limit) with a dirtbike doing about 50! thats gonna sting. And I'll admit it. I walk along there alot too (at least I know the shedual ) but its a bad habbit to be in.Well, you can have your 5 minutes for reading this back, and continue on with your lives.Later -Dave

Well it’s not just the General public to be concerned about. I find many railfans are just as dumb. They are out there with there stupid little safety vest taking pictures in the middle of nowhere. Well to an employee, you look at this and think there might be something wrong with tracks, because the guy was wearing a safety vest, and most railroad employees has to wear one. So when your out there taking pictures, please be careful and stay away from the track, also don’t wear a vest!Another 2 cents worth
