RE: Railfanning Decatur Ga area

Hi Bob:There's not much in Decatur, really. CSX runs east west along the MARTA line (light rail). If you can head west into downtown Atlanta, and then a little more northwest, you'll find a bonanza - Norfolk Southern and CSX yards, wyes, for as far as the eye can see, and trains constantly. You're only minutes from Atlanta.Don't go at night - not a safe neighborhood.Mark

Hey Bob,
The former Georgia Railroad now operated by CSX under lease from the state runs through Decatur, GA. The Marta East line follows it and gives you good overhead views for most of the route. The old depot in Decatur is still intact. Near Eastlake Marta station the former SAL line branches off and crosses Dekalb Avenue leading to the Abbeville sub. This was originally the SAL mainline but other railroads got an injunction stoping them from entering from the east and the built a wye and created new track entering Atlanta from the North. Near the Inman Park Marta station you can see the old Pullman Shops and the Former Georgia Railroad Hulsey yard which is now the main CSX Intermodal terminal. Hope you have a good stay.Oh, try <http://www.csxatlanta.com>
