Are all these needed and what are they? – image 1

LAST EDITED ON Jul-15-04 AT 01:50 PM (EST)

I have some wierd processes running, 32 processes total. Are processes like "opwareSE2.exe", "realsced.exe", "CFTMON.EXE", "CDAC11BA.EXE" something that is common or something that the comp needs? It's been a bit slow and stuff have happened, sure these aren't any virus or spyware? Add-Aware 6 doesn't say anything wrong nor does Norton Anti-Virus 2004.Edit: And Add-Aware say ther's only 27 processes running when there are 32. I have a firewall and I'm very carefull with what webpages I visit and emails.I'm concerned about all this.../JonatanSteam rules!

I think that this thread will be much more accepted in the new off-topic forum here, "The Yard", as the new rules prohibit any and all off-topic posts in the General Forum. That being said, no, technically, all you need running this very second on an XP machine is your internet browser. However, if you're using an older system, then you might need I think win_32.exe running or something like that, but I'm not sure. Are all these needed and what are they? – image 7--The FBL Commuter Edition!!!!!!---You can never have too much inner beauty. RE: Are all these needed and what are they?

Many of the running processes could be 'background' programs that are running down in the taskbar. If you have several icons in the taskbar, you can try going to each and seeing if they have a quit or exit option. After you stop as many as possible you can look again and see if the process count decreases. If you really want to find out what's what, you can stop/exit/quit one, then look and see what process is gone, then do it all again with the next icon. By stopping all legitimate processes it will help narrow down other processes that might be running 'on the sly' and slowing things down. I've found a few programs that virus scans and the latest AdAware don't flag as problems, but are there in the task list causing problems all the same. An example was a program called 'webrebates', caused major slow downs and required a little cosmetic surgery to the registry to get it removed.

Whenever I see something on the task list that I don't know what it is, I check Google. Try doing a Google search for the files you mention. Simply entering for example "opwareSE2.exe" and hitting the search button should turn up enough results to give you an idea what it is.Cheers,

Shut 'em all down, especially realsched.exe. That one for some odd reason greatly contributes to my computer running like crap.
