Hello all-got a question for you who are gurus in the radio area-
I purchased a radio off ebay only long after completing the bidding that it is a UHF radio. I need one for the Illinois Railway Museum, which uses the 160. and 161. radion range which i assume is FM. Is there anyway I can have the motorola dealer change it or put some chip or something into or another way to make it work?
Any information is much appreciated!Thanks,
Kevin V.

RE: Railroad Radio

Hi Kevin,What are the specs for the IRM radio?
What is the part number of the radio that you have?If the radio is not on the same band as the IRM that it will most likely a paperweight.

RE: Railroad Radio

UHF radios will not work on 160/161 MHz.....must be VHF.... Sounds like you've got a nice paperweight...JD

RE: Railroad Radio

I was wondering why you need a 99 channel unit. Almost any scanner can cover all the railroad channels if all you want to do is listen in. The Radio Shack Pro-89 stores 200 channels and is only $129.Larry

He obviously needs to talk on it though, so a scanner is out of the question. There are 90 different frequencies used by the railroads in the United states, and 6 more in Canada ( there are 97, but I was never able to find out what AAR 01 is). Having 99 channels allows you to progam in all 97 channels.

Having dealt with the Federal Communications Commission for the past 28 years, lets just say I remain skeptical. Hope you have deep pockets. Have Fun,

hey guysI got a 16 channel radio to start with, along with mic, belt holster, and battery charger off ebay for about $250.
Yes, it would be illegal except it will be used for Illinois Railway Museum operations, the other channels will be used for roads we run specials on such as BNSF, UP, etc.
I was told by a CN engineer who works there to get a 99 channel because of the 97 channels stated above.
btw, your right, a 99 channel radio brand new costs around $800+ (wont be gettin one of those new for quite some time!)
