MSTS & Norton 2004 – image 1

I installed Norton Anti Virus 2004 on my cpu because my free subscription of McAfee ran out. I got it installed and the updates and everything. But, when I run MSTS I get a short pause about every three seconds. Before I installed it, things were smooth running. BUt I cant uninstall it because it is the only virus protection that I have now. Any suggestions on how I can solve this problem?

RE: MSTS & Norton 2004

NAV 2004 just filters your e-mail. It doesn't do anything with the Internet. For that you need Norton's Internet Security which filters and monitors all internet traffic, blocks popup ads, stops attempts to infilterate your computer, and warns if programs attempt to access the internet or the internet attempts to access programs.Disconnect from the Internet and disable Norton's before running MSTS. The short pause mey be caused by MSTS or something else.Hopefully, you totally uninstalled McAuffe before installing Norton's. That could be causing problems.SRV Ron

I've got NAV 2004 as well... do this:Right click the NAV icon in your taskbar. Select "Disable Auto-Protect".Run MSTS. I always disable it before playing games, and re-enable it when surfing, downloading, etc.You shouldn't get any stutter or what not if you disable it.

Chad,Have you got backups of all your important stuff? I hope so, because when, No, not if, but whenyour computer gets infected you are going to need a backup. Anti-virus programs are not enough you need a firewall. If you have Windows XP then you will have windows XP's own firewall. It's switched off by default, so you will need to switch on:1. Open Control panel.2. Click Network connections.3. Right click on your "active" connection (two tiny blue-illuminated computer screens).4. The Properties box appears. Click on the Advanced tab, and put a check mark where it says protect my computer from the INTERNET accessing my computer. It is compatible with other firewalls, and anti-virus programs. Do it now before them Trojans gettya now!!! .

I have noticed the same pausing SOMETIMES when I have NAV 2003 running, and I have also noticed that it does not happen when 'Auto-protect' is disabled. It haven't figured out yet why this happens, let alone why it does not happen all the time I am running MSTS. If you check the Windows Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) you'll notice that the NAVAPSVC.EXE is kicking in and tacking something like 20% of the CPU time when these pauses occur. (I think that's the program, but it's not out of control on my system at the moment).I had an idea that it could be spyware side effects, yet scans with Adaware and Spybot, each with the most recent program updates found nothing. Same with a complete virus scan. I also wondered if some task, such as e-mail processing, was incomplete and so Norton is struggling to wrap things up but is not able to get over it. So, since I don't have a solution, I guess the best I can say about my reply is that it shows you are not alone, and your diagnosis of what is causing the problem is also right on. (And, curiously, the problem might go away).Today I haven't seen it happen at all, and I've been on and off the internet via dial-up. A few google searches on the web show other people having the same issue, but I haven't found a useful reply given to their on-line complaints.

Never has...And what made you think it's best to install MSTS on a different drive with XP? I think maybe something is seriously messed up with your system.-Jeff

There's nothing wrong with my system at for a fact
when you install game on C drive it's fighting to use
everthing all other programs are using which in turn
makes the game skip, install it on it's OWN drive problem goes
away because the only thing on that drive is the game it's still
working with XP but in a better way so i was told.READ THIS
I just restalled DirectX 9 Vcard Drivers and game to
D drive and ran game with sliders to max on EVERYTHING
and getting 30 to 40 FPS with on problems. So it does work.I was told by the guy bought my computer from he
knows what he's talking about. The game still uses XP but
it just has it's own HD.What ever works for you that's fine i know i'am going this way.Steve

RE: MSTS & Norton 2004

Why disconnect from the Internet before running MSTS? So, MSTS doesn't crash as a result of an interruption caused by a firewall alert.Optional installing on a different drive places all files for MSTS together which can make for improved performance. Similar results can be obtained by installing to the C drive after cleaning it of all unused files, temp files, emptying the trashcan, disabling Restore, and defraging the C drive.SRV Ron
