Since developing models seems to be the major function of my computer these days, I've been looking for ways to back up all these 1's and 0's that represent so many hours of work.Right now I'm using CD's which is sort of workable, but not really as consistent as I would like...There are all konds of "gotchas", not theleast of which are CD's that are no good for anything but coasters.Today I saw an advert for an Iomega REV drive that will hold 30-to 90 GB. Unfortunately it's $400 and beyond my budget. Is anyone using any good working (and inexpensive) backup solutions?

>solutions? Buy a second large drive, (prices are cheap), and get a copy of either Drive Image 7 or Norton Ghost (both are now Symantec.) I prefer Drive Image because it will work with a Raid 0 setup while Norton Ghost won't.Just image your drive to your backup drive, it's a great way to back up and restore your setup quickly.Hard drive backup – image 2

RE: Hard drive backup...

Second hard drive. Quite inexpensive now. Back up using Norton's Ghost. The files created are compressed and can be burned to CD or DVD.Second option is the portable hard drive using USB2.0 or firewire. They are in the 80g+ range and less then half the price of the Iomega. I have two to backup data which I rotate one to a remote location should I lose the computer to fire, theft, or Big Brother. I have also backed up everything through Norton's to 9 DVDs, also stored in a remote location. That took about 12 minutes per DVD using spanned Ghost files. You can file copy to either drive for backup although I recommend a product like Norton's Ghost so you can back up the operating system. Backing up that way saves all of your software and Windows updates. it took me about 20 minutes to restore the C drive after a worm screwed everything up. Only other option is the format:c, reinstall everything which can take days.SRV Ron

RE: Hard drive backup...

I use Acronis true image, works from Windows (on xp). If you computer have USB or Firewire the best option (the one i use) is buy an external HD case that allow to put inside a hard drive and is very fast, prices in CEE are around 50€ + the HD, some cases have also both connections (USB and Firewire).

Also, if you have an old IDE drive sitting around, you can buy enclosures for $60 that will convert it to an external USB 2.0 and Firewire drive.-Jeff
