Ok, I'm sitting here watching "Atomic Train" on the Sci-Fi channel and am wondering what kind of locomotives were used in the filming of this turkey. Any help would be appreciated.

RE: Atomic Train - The Movie

I watched this movie before and they were using BCR's M420's in the movie. But some of which were models for the derailment scene. Mike

If they pan at the loco a little longer, I can get a good look at it. It's hard to see when they keep changing picture or scene too fast.Did you notice that they put catwalks on some boxcars for the movie? RE: Atomic Train - The Movie

Found something and it was BCR's M420's, 2 had the BCR liveries on them and the others ones were painted WestRail for the movie.

WHo's the manufacture of the loco? It don't look like GE or EMD judging by the look of the trucks. Was it Alco?Ken Plaza Atomic Train - The Movie – image 7

Well, this is the first time I've watched this movie, and I can finally agree with everyone that 'Atomic Train' is indescribably horrible, where train operations (everyone knows you put your fingers in the coupler during a slack run-in) and probably everything else is concerned, but M420's are nice loco's.
I remembered a site that goes by the name of BCR Film that has shots of the filming of 'Atomic Train,' but this site seems to have been taken down. And according to this thread from another forum, M420 #642, a loco featured in the movie, was sold to Genesee Valley Transportation. And according to THIS, Canadia National will assume all operations of BCRail?! Like a UP/SP merger?! Only in Canada?!

RE: Atomic Train - The Movie

>Canadia National will assume all operations of BCRail?! Like a UP/SP >merger?! Only in Canada?! Yup, all the railroads wanted BCRail even CPRail but CP only has one connection to connect up to the BCR and CN has two connection points with the BCR. If it was CP having the line it would be another branch line for them but they would make money off of it but that BCR has two interchange points CN has got it so say if a derailment happens on a train enroute to Prince Rupert, CN can use the BCR interchange east of the derailment site and detour there trains down to that line and on to there other line going into Robert's Bank. So ya see what I mean...I wished it was CP having that line because CN is gobbling up everything in sight.Mike

BTW... are you permitted to turn off the volume of the radio in the cab? The engineer (should he even be called an enginner?!) was told to back off, and turned off the radio. He DID save a life, and when the train hit the grade the brakes locked, yet the chase loco's didn't see the Atomic Train stopping, and the brakes released when he rear-ended it.The guy who played the conductor, the one who kinda looks like Conan O'Brian (what am I saying?!) died while making an attempt to connect the air hoses, and later on in the movie he is playing the fire truck driver. What's up with that?!Freight cars these days still have handbrakes, right? One was visible on the gondola with the unsecured flammables, right?

RE: Atomic Train - The Movie

i think that the fire truck driver and conductor were two diffrent people because i recicnised one(the fire truck driver) to have made an apperance in stargate(a scifi show i watch alot) and if they were the same actor i would have recicnised the conductor as well.
ps sorry about my horable spelling

RE: Atomic Train - The Movie

Ok, according to the Internet Movie Database, the conductor(fireman, headend brakeman or whatever) was played by Zack Ward, and the firetruck driver was played by Aaron Pearl. They are definetly two different actors. And by the way, for any real movie buff, the IMDb site is just about the last work in movie info.

"Freight cars these days still have handbrakes, right?"I thought the same thing when I saw it. At least they considered that the locos had dynamics. Also, they should have shut the throttle off. When it showes scenes in the cab of the M420, the throttle was on and not in idle.Central Illinois Locomotive Works FounderCILW's Web Site is http://home.insightbb.com/~rkelsey/wsb/html/view.cgi-home.html-.html

FURX mentioned that the throttle was stuck. I don't think I caught that part, but I'll just take his word. But here's another idea: Is it possible to uncouple cars while the train is in motion? The chase locomotives could have just coupled to the caboose while one of the guys uncoupled the Atomic's engines from the rest of the train, instead of putting too much stress on the coupler and finally causing it to break apart. I also caught some of the railcars with friction-bearing trucks. Those are still legal? Here is one guy's comments on 'Atomic Train.'EDIT: I keep forgetting to delete the "http!!!" But: The helicopter which came to the MOW crew setting the derailer parked right on the right of way. Very, very smart.
