Jan-23-02, 03:57 AM (EST) "Virus Warning, do not open any attachments from me: rgarber" Inadvertently my computer's anti-virus program was turned off by an unauthorized user and a virus came through. If you've got an email from me, I didn't send it, but do not open the attachment. The virus is Sircam32. I only learned of this coming on late this evening and have fixed the problem on my end but I have no idea who got sent what as for most of the day the computer was off and I wasn't around. Major apologies for this or any inconvienence.Rich Garber Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

That one is for real, or...?

Use webmail then the attachments aren't automatically downloaded to your computer. Email client's are space wasters anyhow. Whatever you do don't touch that attachment. Delete without even glancing at it. You probably could get away with having no virus protection on your machine ever if you don't use email clients, don't open attachments, and don't download exe files from questionable sources, and don't run a perm or semi-perm network on a fixed IP.-Andy

The reason I asked Rich is that the text in the message was written to me personally. I doubt a Sircom virus write a message like that...

"RE: Virus Warning, do not open any attachments from me: rgarber" Hi,I cannot recall it literally, but the Nimda and Sircam line is something like this:"Hi, I want to have your advice about this file"And this is the only line in the message. When this is the case, delete it and empty the Deleted Messages folder.Dick van den Hoven

I've written hardly anybody in the past week or so working on projects around here and the route. All this came as news to me when it did. From what I gather about this virus it randomnly chooses a title, and puts a somewhat brief personal attachment to it. The thing is, ask anybody, I don't write short notes! So it wasn't from me.Anyway the booger of it all is I lost all my emails from those who liked the E Metro RR and said so. There was hundreds of those. I was keeping them for posterity. We just decided the safe thing to do was eliminate any possible source of further contamination since my list is rather extensive. No problem... it shouldn't take forever to get the next route done!Latest updates: www.edmfamily.com/msts/index.htm and look for Bodiddly progress report link.Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Now I'll go play with my newest toy, got me TSM today..yippee
