VIA/GO/TTC/SkyTrain/WCX Policy on Photos – image 1

I'm going to Canada in August and taking the Canadian from Toronto to Vancouver. I was wondering what the photography policy of the above transit authorities/railroads is. Are their policies more photo friendly than the ones here in the US?

Hey.No real policies. Basic rules, no trespassing, be safe etc. You're not allowed to open the dutch doors on #1 to shoot anything.
Don't tell anyone, but my dad and I did at Capreol, Pair of GP40-2L's on a freight ready to head west. And at Edmonton, Can't pass up A1A GMD1's EH!! Have fun! Its a wonderfull trip!Rob

RE: VIA/GO/TTC/SkyTrain/WCX Policy on Photos

Officially, the TTC's policy is that no pictures may be taken for commercial purposes without a permit, but pictures for personal use are OK.HOWEVERSome people in Toronto have had trouble with TTC security because the staff sometimes misinterpret the rule as "no photos are allowed on TTC property".I've never experienced this problem myself, but others have found that if there are TTC Special Constables in the area, if you mention to them why you're taking pictures before you start taking pictures, you will likely be able to continue without trouble.I'm not sure about GO, I've taken pictues without problems before, but then, there was no GO staff around when I did it....VIA I wouldn't worry about. From my expereince most of the on-board crew are used to railfans taking pictures.I hope you enjoy your trip!VIA/GO/TTC/SkyTrain/WCX Policy on Photos – image 6Dave Reage - Beta Tester

I've done all of the above when I lived in Toronto and I had no problems.

I've never experienced it either, but there was lots of discussion about it a few months ago on the transit-toronto discussion list.I guess as with many things, it depends on who you run into and what kind of mood they're in!VIA/GO/TTC/SkyTrain/WCX Policy on Photos – image 8Dave Reage - Beta Tester

Dave, to be fair, it was one "character" who was doing the majority of the complaints. As was with Chicken Little though, it is hard to discern truth from fiction with him.TTC: Okay, as long as you've paid your fare on their property, and you abade by common-sense (no flash indoors, etc.), you shouldn't get hassled. Just remember that the TTC does allow non-commercial photography...if anyone asks, tell them that you're taking the photos for your own collection.GO: They're a little more tricky. CN Police have stepped up their patrols of the rights-of-way over the past couple of years, and the GO-Stapo are more than willing to write you a ticket if you do so much as cross one toe over the yellow fare-boundary line. So, if you're going to take shots, do it either from public property, or do it from a station platform but with a valid fare stub. They too have a section in their charter saying that non-commercial photography is allowed. As for the others, I can only assume that they are more or less the same. I have heard many good things about the people who work for the Vancouver transit system, so you should have no problems there. When in doubt, email the individual agencies and ask what their policies are about taking photos.DanAbsolute power corrupts absolutely.

You're right about that Dan, I suppose in retrospect it was one individual who had most of the problems (if I remember correctly it seemed to me his attitude only served to inflate the situation).Like I said, I've never personally had any problems, although I'm not in Toronto that often.VIA/GO/TTC/SkyTrain/WCX Policy on Photos – image 10Dave Reage - Beta Tester

You're assuming that those situations actually happened.I have to say that I've met him several times, and for the most part he seems like a good guy. However, much of what is written by him anywhere is taken with a huge grain of salt.Everyone that I know of in the community has never had any major issues. Myself included.DanAbsolute power corrupts absolutely.

If you're a trainmaster with CP Rail you should've gotten on for free. (I get on for free with VIA Rail and pay a cent a mile for Amtrak because I am the son of a railroad employee)Don't gripe about spending money, want not waste not.And no I'm not starting a flame war here Dr. SatanI'm otherwise known as the SatanTrain

BTW: I'm doing this all from my brother's computer. My HD died over the weekend (just as the warrenty was about to run out), and I don't have MSTS (and I can't install it) on this computer. Dell had us on the phone for 5 hours, an hour of which was on hold, lying about the warrenty expiration date (7/7 12:00AM, they said 7/4 then 7/5), then disconnecting us. So don't expect me back on my old computer anytime soon.

I think VIA Rail actually has a contest on right now. It runs out on AUG 15(Spot the Spiderman 2 Locomotive) so they would probably be pretty easy about pictures. I saw one locomotive and I wouldent to be able to remember date, roadnumber and place if I hadent taken it.
Cheers and have fun in Canada (us Canadians are'nt as bad as we seem, lol)Morgan
