How do Movie and TV producers get shots of trains from underneith as they race overhead? Do they dig a hole for a cameraman to climb into?

They do dig a hole, but the camera is remotely operated. If you happen to have (or can get) "How the West Was Won" on DVD they touch on how they set up the trainshot in a documentary on the disk.Brad Meyer

You don't need to know how becuase, if you are attempting it, you do know it IS illegal, AND you are tresspassing which is also illegal. If you're not going to attempt it, then it's ok to know how.Anyways, chances are more than likely you'll lose your expensive camera.

RE: under the train shots

I work in the film industry and if you saw how half the stuff was done your vision of a movie would change.Having worked on Atomic train you might like to know one of the engines was made by the carpenter dept from wood and it was a site going down the highway.
Cameras yes can be remotely operated but when working with the railways filming the liason present has the yea or nay to what can be done.
Never try going out into the middle of a track and laying your camera down.As Jay mentioned it first trespassing and dangerous. Hollywood has many tricks

RE: under the train shots

They now have remote wireless TV cameras so small that they can be fitted inside a Cricket Stump, showing the ball coming towards it. Similar techniques are used on racing cars, showing vivid action scenes. All you would have to to is to attach one of those to a Railway tie / sleeper and tape it's output with your receiver nearby in your car or van.O t t o

RE: under the train shots

14 years ago I threaded my two PZM microphones underneath the rail and onto the sleepers between the two rails to record the sound of trains going over them. This was done right at the end of the platform of Cheltenham railway station, so technically I was not trespassing. A rail official came up to me and said it was dangerous etc, etc, but I managed to capture a few trains up to then. If anyone has any ideas about recording train sounds this way, forget it! The recording sounded dreadful, and...and I got oil and stuff on my mikes; therefore you can imagine what might be deposited on camera lenses.Mike

RE: under the train shots

Hmmm..... I thought they hired mentally-challenged people to lay down on the ties and hold the camera.... Quickly cut to a scene from quasi-Warner Brothers cartoon (probably something along the lines of Pinky and the Brain or Benny the big, fat and dumb cat from that was always calling everyone George...)Hey, you. Ya, YOU!Duh, me?Ya.... You wanna make five dollars?Dooooh, yup! yup! yup!Take this and go lay down over there.... I'll tell ya when to get up.<singing> I'm gon-na make five dol-lars! I'm gon-na make five dol-lars!Daaah, George? Why is that whistle blowing, George?--
There are all sorts of connotations that I can imagine here but I think I'll just leave it alone!JBD

RE: under the train shots

Mike,I think the best way to record "Wheels on Tracks" sounds would be to attach a wireless Microphone to a non-motor unit wheels bogie. If no railway official sees you taping one to it you could sit in the carriage recording it ! Mind you, a few Bank Notes can also grease somebody's hand to look elsewhere for a few minutes ? When trains had still concertinas connecting passenger cars you could have dangled one down to record the sounds or perhaps lowering one from a window, weighted down suitably to prevent it swinging into the path of an oncoming train ?Take Care, O t t o.

RE: under the train shots

CN filmed an ontrack view of a train coming out of the Sarnia tunnel for a video they did about it. They put it in a protective clear box and operated it remotly. That way if anything was dragging, the camera wouldn't get broken and it would stay in place as the train sped over it.Rob
