While doing my wholsesale route in Utica, NY, I notice while crossing a bridge several former Conrail units, perhaps U boats, with the middle cut out, so it literally looks like a "U Boat". I don't know the original markings, but I notice they are renumbered to 3604, and 3609, in what looks like a NS patch job. But this is off the CSX mainline, so I am not sure.ANYWAYS...I guess my biggest question is why are the middle sections of these trains gone? Obviously, this is where the engine once was, but with such a old unit, what would be the use of taking the engine out of a engine for a model rarely used these days? Also, if anybody can dig up what kind of model it is, that would be good to.Chris Bogley

HI Chris...
I work about a block from where you were...
You are correct as those are former Conrail U-boats that NS got in the merger. Once NS retired those units they we sold, to whom I'm not sure, I believe Providence and Worchester...?Who ever it was also bought a bunch of those former BN cabless units as well.Anyway all the work was done by NYS&W shops in Utica, That was NYS&W northern terminal that you saw Chris, it sits next to the CSX, former Conrail water level route. If you looked off to the east off the bridge you were on, you could see Union station, and the yards for Adirondack Scenic Railroad and Mohawk, Adirondack & Northern. But I know they pumped out some units for P&W as well as those new Penn East units that Jake has posted a model of in the Screen shots forum. They do a lot of work for lease companies, about a year ago they had a crap load of former Conrail c30-7 units that were reconditioned for lease work.In short those units you saw were cannibalized to rebuild others.Hope this helps...

RE: Former Conrail, Now NS or CSX 3604, 3609 question

Helped alot, thanks, and yes, I also noticed some BN units beyond the others, plus a slew of others. We do the Price Choppers out there, Genesee Street, Commercial Drive, and the one by the Thruway, so if your out and about and see the truck, flag me down. I rotate with another driver though, so it may not be me. And BTW, they get thier doughnuts on Tues, Thurs, and Sat Usually were done out there by noonish. Thanks for the info!!!Chris Bogley
