Whistle question – image 1

LAST EDITED ON Jun-25-04 AT 12:37 PM (EST)

Did the roads have a special type of whistle on all their steam locos or did each loco type have their own "voice"?
Like that the UP had 5-chimes (?) on all their locos or that their 4-8-4's had one type while all the 2-8-0's or 2-8-2's had another?I'm asking as All my Cornerian Rail locos have different whistles even if they are of the same type. Should for example all my 0-8-0's have a distinctive whistle and my 2-8-2's another one?I just wanna know as all the locos in Sweden sounded the same regardless to what class they were./JonatanSteam rules!

RE: Whistle question.

Here in the US, and I believe Canada also, steam locomotive whistles had a wide variety of sounds. Mostly depending on the railroads preference. Usually you would also find differences between types of locomotives and also between locomotives used for passenger and those for freight service. On your 0-8-0's and 2-8-2's, it would not be unusual to have whistles for switchers different from road power. So, I would say this would be typical for NA practices. But I do not know much about Cornerian Rail, so cannot comment on them specifically. If you do a search with google, you can probably find some sites where you can here various whistles from different engines. I do have several downloaded from various sites, but since I cannot remember from where they came, not sure if it is acceptable to upload elsewhere. I will see if I can find some links and post later.Hope this helps!Mykel
