I installed Zone Alarm today and when I launched Train Similator I got an alert saying that ZoneAlarm blocked "Program: Microsoft Train Simulator Patch v1.4". The program itself seems to be unaffected. Does anybody know anything about this? Did MS package some sort of program that transmits data whenever I use MSTS?Thanks
Joe

Find out WHY Zone Alarm is freaking out then make changes accordingly.I run two firewalls and have been doing so for over two years now. One firewall is part of my router and each computer in this house runs Zone Alarm. I have NEVER had a reason to disable either, except of course to update Zone Alarm itself. One cannot relax on internet security.Cheers,

RE: Strange ZoneAlarm message...

In the ZoneAlarm programs list, click properties on the "patch". Where does it say it's located?I'm not aware of any 1.4 patch, nor why it would try to run when you start MSTS.-Jeff

-----You are reading my signature now, don't waste your time reading it!-----
Or probably, maybe you should waste your time reading it.
Eh, where did my signature go?
Oh, here it is, the one you are reading right now? Can't you see it? I know I know, it's probably too bright to see it.
Hey, look at my avatar, nice right? I drew it with my own hands holding the mouse in Paint, with the pencil tool(and the Filling tool!)!
It's a picture of me in Planet Stooopid, where everything is the same as what you call "Earth" except that we are called "aliens" in your planet.
Anyway, I warned you not waste time reading my signature! You have just wasted probably about 30 seconds reading it, where you could have spent the time doing better things, like maybe reading the next post below if there is one...

It's located within my train simulator root directory. In my case it's D:/Program Files/Microsoft Games/Train Simulator/train.exe. I have the v1.2 patch but this v1.4 patch caught me off guard. I've never heard of it before, never knew I had it, and don't know why it's trying to access the internet.Joe

RE: Strange ZoneAlarm message...

Hi Joe,One of the items when debuging slow system with MSTS is to NOT have AV and firewalls running when MSTS is loaded.
ZA is known to cause problems on some machines.

And looking at my MSTS in ZA, it also says patch v1.4. Strange, so 1.2 installs 1.4? Hmmm....Anyway, it shouldn't be asking for net access. The only communication it does is through send/don't send, and that is a process separate from the game .exe. I would just deny it access.-Jeff

RE: Strange ZoneAlarm message...

I have no idea why it should be trying to access the internet, but the patched version of train.exe shows as v1.4 in the properties box.Beer is not a matter of life and death. It is much more serious than that.

RE: Strange ZoneAlarm message...

Yes, Mervyn, somebody else pointed that out a long time ago and when I checked my not updated to 1.2 version on the older WIN-98SE MSTS the Train.exe Properties / Version says that it is 1.4 and the Train.exe file is dated December 2001.The WIN-XP MSTS which has been updated with Version 1.2 also shows Version 1.4 and the Train.exe date is December 2001 too.The Golden Rule when using MSTS is that there must be nothing else running in the background, no Firewall, Virus Checker, Network or other SERVICES not required !O t t o
