Jan-21-02, 06:03 PM (EST) "Width of streets" I think that the width of traffic lanes on city street is usually 10 feet or 12 feet but I'm not sure. I know that large buses and trucks are almost 9 feet wide. Jeffrey. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: Width of streets" I don't know about where you live but here (Boston) even major "parkways" with 45mph speed limits and tons of curves, not to mention regular streets, give you about a 6-7ft wide lane. Makes driving exciting, and biking even more so. People gotta learn to exit on the sidewalk side -Andy

Jan-21-02, 08:28 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Width of streets" I live in Staten Island, NY where major streets and highways are wider than residental streets. On most one-way single-lane streets with parking spaces on both sides, a large vehicle can't pass another large vehicle that's doubled-parked. Jeffrey. >wide lane.Wow. I wouldn't even be able to lay down in the road without taking up two lanes. That is a narrow street. Reminds me of some the residential streets close to downtown Chicago. . .where it's as wide as a regular street, but with parking on both sides. It's like playing dodgeball troub

Jan-21-02, 08:00 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Width of streets" Jeff;Did some measuring so that I could make some things. Found that for a city street it was 15' from the center line to the curb. Found a semi trailer was 8' wide. I think it depends a lot on the street you are talking about. I think 12' is close, that allows 2' feet on either side of a semi trailer.David Klemm

Jan-22-02, 04:38 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Width of streets" The lanes on the Interstate highway system are 13 feet wide. The reason for this was to allow military vehicles such as tanks to use the highways during a wartime emergency. Just for informational purposes I believe they have some sort of rubber attachments for the tank tracks so that they don't chew up the road. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-21-02, 10:30 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Width of streets" Yeah David, I think you're on to something with 15 ft. I remember when my parents bought several lots in town, and it was noted on the plots, and they were told by the city, that there were imaginary roads running through the middle of the property. Basically, they were in the road design, but it was impractical or unnecessary to use or pave them, so for all intents and purposes they didn't exist. BUT, the right of way for the roads was 30 feet. 15 feet from the center line to the edge. Now, that's the theoretical width. I know that not all of the roads were that wide (especially the ones in town, where structures and necessities like sidewalks get in the way), so it just depends on how they decide to manage the space, I guess.troub
