Since I got my new system about 6 months ago I have yet to install a graphics card. I plan to buy one soon and I need some opinions on what are some good graphics cards for reasonable prices. Any opinions are appreciatedChris
Define reasonable price. Since ATI and Nvidia came out with their brand new cards recently, the previous top dogs (Radeon 9800 and Nvidia FX59xx series) have begun falling in price. You can get a 9800Pro for well under $300 now; same with most FX59xx cards.
For the best performance vs value ratio, I suggest either the ATI Radeon 9600XT 256MB or the Radeon 9800Pro 128MB. I'm planning on getting the first of them this summer... hopefully.
Cedarbrae RR - A fictional railroad in rural lands. Coming soon.
Go with the 9800 Pro unless you're on a strict budget. The 9600XT's got more RAM and a higher clock speed, but the 9800 Pro's got double the memory bus width (256-bit) and double the pixel and vertex pipelines (8 vs. 4). Even at a lower clock speed it will beat the 9600XT, and the higher you crank your resolution, antialiasing, and anisotropic filtering the more the 9600XT falls behind. AA/AF are all about the memory bandwidth, and even with the higher clock the 9600's RAM can't keep up with the 9800 Pro's slower-but-wider bus. You'll be able to bump up the eye candy in MSTS but not see near as much of a speed hit.Mr. F
