Power in the land-down under – image 1

G'day. I FIANLLY(!!!) got some of my film processed onto CD so I can up load these shots onto train-sim.com, These photos can also be found on the website that Adam and I are working on. (in my Sig )OK, now time for the photos. These were taken at Midland Junction on the 16th of June 2004. (last week). First train of the day was "Pacific National" 4PM5 (Perth to Melbourne intermodal). The power for this train was "NR53 - Trailer Rail" and "NR58 - Seatrain. Power in the land-down under – image 2
A shot of the graffiti attacked "crew car". Remember, Down here in Australia, it takes 2 days to travel from Perth to Adelaide!! No crew changes on the desert!

Power in the land-down under – image 4The Intermodal train was made up for Auto-racks and "5-packs" of fully articulated cars.

Power in the land-down under – image 7Spot on time. 1220pm. Adelaide (later Sydney) bound Indian Pacific. It is "Great Southern Railway's" train, but the train is hauled with "Pacific National" locomotives. NR79 has the houners today.

Coming back from lunch. Q303 screamed through Midland at 80kph.
This is not the best shot. I was sitting at the traffic lights when I saw the gates go down.
Power in the land-down under – image 9Any Aussies in the forums have any idea what is in these containers? Its a Kalgoorlie to Kwinana freighter.
Power in the land-down under – image 10My car.
Power in the land-down under – image 11I decided that nothing else would be coming through Midland Junction for another 45 minutes or so. I headed out to ARG's Forrestfeild Yard and caught L260 scream underneath the Tonkin Highway. Yes, these ARE SD40's, but they are a little different. Still sound the same! Sorry about the AWFUL photo. I literally had 10 seconds to get my camera, get out the car and shoot!
Power in the land-down under – image 12A going away shot of the L Class as it heads off to the port city of Kwinana.
Power in the land-down under – image 13Another idea which I might like to model for MSTS.
Power in the land-down under – image 14Thats all folks!! I admit they arnt the greatest shots, but they capture the flavour of Western Australian railways. Sadly, this is the last time I will get film processed...as I am getting a new Digital Camera for my Birthday. >Mike Forster<

Thanks a lot guys!! Jeffery, Pacific National can only run double stack trains between Perth and Adelaide now. Some stack trains make it into New South Wales and get "single stacked" at a place called "Goobang Junction". Its really the cities of Melbourne and Sydney that due to the low level clearence (bridges, tunnels etc), wont permit Stack trains. There has been word for years(!!!!) now that the Melbourne-Adelaide line will be cleared for stack trains, but I dont think that will EVER happen. >Mike Forster<

>but I dont think that will EVER happen. Just when you thought all was lost, there are plans and wait for it.....money has been allocated to fix the tight spot.We have tri level tracks at Footscray with the std guage at the bottom.
The plans are to lift the upper 2 tracks to make the extra height for the std track.edit: with the take over of NSW track by the federal track company, we may yet see the height problems in NSW go away too.

RE: Power in the land-down under.

Depends on where the double stacking is to go.In Sydney, forget it. Overhead catenery there is far too big an issue - they would need to build an entirely new freight dedicated line, and while there are signs that they are heading in that direction the trains would still have to travel under wires. There is also a lot of tunnels and bridges to worry about. The problem is, so much freight has to go through Sydney. They need to build a Sydney bypass really, preferably east of the Blue Mountains. Fat chance of that.Drove to Adelaide via Broken Hill last week, saw a fair few road trains, more than I was expecting. Have they been dislocated from the Darwin - Alice run?

I shall have to check it out in October when I am over there for a week! A PM6 train would be good profit!!>In Sydney, forget it. Overhead catenery there is far too big an issue - they would need to build an entirely new freight dedicated lineWe have done those 2 things here in Perth too! I dont know if you can see it in the photos, but there is the Perth Electric network in the background. Midland Terminius. From Guildford East to Midland, its quad track. 2 dedicated suburban electric lines (dual gauge for the IP) parralell to the "Eastern States Mainline" which is Freight only. However, over out at Fremantle, because the suburban line and the freight line cross over the Swan River on a double track steel bridge, the government had to raise the wires quite considerably to allow stacks. >Mike Forster<

RE: Power in the land-down under.

yes but how big is your electric network?Sydney's electric network is quite extensive. The shortest bit freight needs to worry about is from Macarthur to Sydney, at least 30 km of new line or wire raising would need to be done - then tunnels and bridges on the southern highlands line would need to be upgraded or bypassed (picton tunnel, bethungra etc)From the west, Lithgow is the start of the electric network, thats some 150+km of 1500volt wires, ten tunnels in the blue mountains, lots of bridges, sharp curves and 1 in 33 grades. From the north, Broadmeadow to Sydney, around the same amount of wires, 8 tunnels on this section alone, many more between here and Brisbane. Its potentially feasable to allow melbourne - sydney stacked freight, perhaps adelaide - sydney via the southern highlands, but I wouldnt hold my breath about it. Maybe once the "rail clearways" project is completed in a few years it might change.

Thanks guys!! Derek, unfortunatly, I will only be in Melbourne for about 3 days. The rest of the time I will be out at Ballarat with my family. If I have time I'll give you a buzz about it! Dad and I are going to check out Gehringhap Loop sometime too!Brendan: Yeah...too right hey!! I guess the good thing about Perth is its planning. I dont know about Sydney, But if you were to look at a satellite view of Perth, you can see it is in 5 Spikes of built up area, all following both a major highway AND a major rail link. So getting freight releativly close into Perth is quite easy. I see what you mean about Sydney!! I havent been there myself, but it sounds like there is lots(!!) of work to be done! BTW: The tomato sauce was in my pocket....for whatever reason. LOL!John: I havent actually seen an ARG interstate intermodal train for a long time. But sometimes they are lying around at thier Forrestfeild Yard, or at the container terminal at Kewdale. I'll see what I can do for you mate! Jay: Thanks mate! Hehehe, nah...you just have to avoid the NSW part, they have "Funnel Web" spiders which are about the most deadly in the world. What you have to worry about where I live is Snakes and Kangaroos! Ohhhh, and in the summer time, Heat...and lots of it! >Mike Forster<

RE: Power in the land-down under.

The snowy bits are mostly the elevated areas above 1500 metres, all major cities are fine. We had our shortest day of the year a few days ago, and it was 21 degrees celcius - 70 farenhiet! Its dry and warm as, in Sydney at least, our water supplies are down to 45%

>Winter in the southern part of Australia usually means around 5 - 15 degrees celcius and rain showers. As for the tropical areas (QLD, NT & northern WA), they don't really get a winter and most people from the south head north for their holidays at this time of the year --Victorian Railfan Web Site:

RE: Power in the land-down under.

Spiders, scary? Nah, they arent that bad. I grew up in the funnel web capital of the world, Sydney's north shore. Yep all Sydney's rich people live with a very agressive spider which has enough poison in one bite to drop a horse. Still, since the antivenom was produced in the 80s there has not been a single death (which is impressive as it was almost uniform curtains for anyone who was bitten).Snakes are the big one. Brown snakes, Taipans, Red Belly Black Snakes, so on, we have 9 of the top 10 most poisonous. Can I point out though, I'm 22 years old, been living here all but 2 months of my life, and I'm not dead yet?
