RE: Last DRGW Tunnel Motor!!

LAST EDITED ON Jun-21-04 AT 09:20 AM (EST)

Yep, it is my layout. When I was like 10 or so we closed in our garage and built a new one. Need I say more, my Dad works on it alot too. Yep the SD70M is from Athearn. I got 4 of them running around the layout. Two like that, 1 with the flag, and one EMD Demonstrator. They are all Genesis and the flag unit came ready to roll. I think I paid like $109.99 for the first two (plan UP), the flag was $119.99, I think, and the EMD I got on sale at a train show for $59.99, I couldn't pass it up. I still need to do alot of stuff on the layout. Grass, tress, balast, the list goes on and on, Here are some more pictures . . .PS: Any other unit is likely Athearn Blue Box, exept for the SD90MACs they are Kato.

RE: Last DRGW Tunnel Motor!!

The Athearn SD70Ms in the flag scheme as well as their AC4400s in the same scheme were all produced without license from UP which I say more power to Athearn for screwing UP over about it. good for them. Then again, look at the ready to roll boxes...our good ol' american made friends aint american made anymore...even athearn has gone to China now. My question is that if athearn and proto2000 are both in China, why does proto2000 have such more detail?
just wondering.
btw-I have 4526 with the flag-did about $80 worth of details and weathered it up-if I ever take pics I'll post them. I also have both AC4400s, 6366 and 5792. Beautiful engines indeed!

Sure is! Designated as "Tunnel Motors". The radiator grills are low down on the locomotive so when it is in a tunnel, the engine can extract cool air from low down in the tunnel. Remembering that warm are risies, cool are sinks. >Mike Forster<

RE: Last DRGW Tunnel Motor!!

My layout is 14x16 ft. All of the locomotives are out of the box, I didn't add anything to them, except black wash to the vents and painted the hand rails. If anyone else has any pictures of their layout post them. Ohhh, the AC4400 pushing on the coal drag is an Athearn Blue box and it is in the 'Operation Livesaver' scheme. I am going to add some more pictures of the EMD Demonstrator. I just realized I didn't post any before. It is pretty new so it doesn't have the black wash yet.PS: On the second picture the flash went off, I think it made an interusting shot!

RE: Last DRGW Tunnel Motor!!

Great layout brian! I should get started on mine soon. That loop looks pretty cool. What curve radius are you using?

RE: Last DRGW Tunnel Motor!!

The loop is 32in. radius and the tightist corner on the main line is 30in. Then only thing I wish we would of have done different is the switches, we used Atlas 'Snap' switches witch are 24in. (I think). They are a little tight. If you are just starting laying track I would strongly advise you to use Peco or some other type of switch rather than the 'snap' switch. There is nothing wrong with them but they can cause headaches if you want to run longer rolling stock.PS: I am going to leave in a few hours to go to Colorado so I won't post for 7 - 9 days
