I have been able to run MSTS reasonably well with Windows ME after I upgraded to a new video card GeForce MX440 SE GPU. FPS were very good.
Now that I have upgraded to Windows XP the FPS fluctuate from say, 38 to zero then come back up to 38. Frequently the fps stay at zero for anywhere from 2 to 10 seconds. Can anyone advise as to what is wrong, please. Boris

RE: FPS Frames per second

Hi Claude, Thanks for your quick reply. I have re-installed the video card and run the mprofile as you suggested. There was no change in performance. I am trying to find out if there is an update to the video driver. It appears that some games do not work very well on XP. I'll have to investigate further. Thanks again for your help. RE: FPS Frames per second

Boris, some cards don't work very well with the newest video driver either. I had an nvidea card that wouldn't work right with the newest drivers so had to find anohter driver that would work right. I tried about four of them until I found one that would work with my card. I would say that is your problem. If you are getting 38fps then that is great, but if it keeps fluctuating that means the driver isn't the one you need. I would search for other drivers and try them out. As for games working on XP. I haven't run across a game, old or new that would not run on my XP and I have had XP since it came out many years ago now.
If a game won't run on XP then the drivers for the video or sound card are wrong or the set up is wrong for the game. It isn't XP....trust me on this one. I know what I am talking about. Good luck!JLFPS Frames per second – image 2

And checking the games support site, they often come right out and say, will not run on Win XP.Funny they would mention the OS specifically, and not the drivers/video card/sound card, isn't it? And what about the compatibility wizard? (which I have never found an instance where it worked) Odd that they would put that in there if they didn't think older products would have issues with XP, don't you think? -Jeff

RE: FPS Frames per second

Well Jeff, you tell me the games or send them to me that won't work and I guarantee you I will get them to work. And the compatibility will work because I have had it work. And that is why it is in there so it would get the programs to work.
And this has absolutely nothing to do with the originators problems anyway. Why are you busting my chops with this nonsense instead of helping the man get his software to work. He is the one that was told that XP might be the problem with the game and then made a statement that was untrue. I just tried to help him by suggesting he try another driver because that is usually the cause of most problems despite your lack of knowledge of the same. We all know that MSTS works on XP and works quite well. Yet he seems to be blaming the OS for the problem. I am assuring him that it is not and no doubt a driver which others above have also said.
See, instead of helping him, you are clogging up the thread with something that is not helping him at all but rather questioning my voracity when you know nothing of my background or experience. If I didn't believe or know something about what I am talking about, I wouldn't have even answered the man's question.
Since you obviously cannot help him, or unwilling to, why don't you just stay out of the thread.Thank you

-Sigh-You are correct. The problem he is having with MSTS isn't XP.I'm not trying to bust anyones chops. I'm simply saying that XP isn't the magic bus you are touting it to be.No, I don't know your background, nor do you know mine. Non-existant credentials aside, It is safe to say that with the countless hardware configurations out there, nothing is absolute! You can not guarantee that any given software will work on any system. Some drivers just will not play well with others. And aside from getting the entities who wrote the drivers together to work up a fix, your options are basically nil. Unless of course, you want to whip up some complimentary drivers on your own.So whether you have encountered software that doesn't run on XP is neither here nor there. Not everybody is so lucky.-Jeff

>Actually if I had to guess right now with the limited information we have, he is possibly a little light on the CPU and or Memory... And a third possibility is his hard disk....
I'm basing my guess on he is getting 38fps in some areas and it's possible that he is losing it when he crosses a tile boundary or passes an AI train... Even on machines like mine there is a perceptible hit at that time... You can never totally eliminate it but you can minimize it... Thanks again Kujo for a really well written game engine!
Before we could go further it would be instructive to know what kind and speed of CPU he has, what his patch level is in XP, What his various driver and directX levels are, How much memory he has and what type, size and speed of hard drive...
Then Maybe, just maybe we can help a little more...

RE: FPS Frames per second

One important aspect when running MSTS is that there must be nothing else running at the same time, no Network, Internet, Multi-Media, Virus Programmes, etc.Do a Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the TASK MANAGER and have a look at what else is active and End Process of everything not needed to run MSTS. Don't worry about making a mistake, re-starting the machine will correct it if you do and you won't touch it the next time !

There are also many "SERVICES" active, not required by average users slowing things down you may want to check out too:http://www.blackviper.com/winxp/servicecfg.htmO t t o

RE: FPS Frames per second

Gentlemen, Gentlemen,
Let me firstly thank you all for your replies to my little problem. I have reached my "3 score & ten" am retired, Live DOWNUNDER and like playing with trains! I am totally self taught on matters computer so a lot of the terms used confuse me to some extent. Having said all that, to the best of my knowledge my machine has a 20GB hard drive of which 7.2GB is used and 10.9 GB is free. I have installed, 512 MB memory, DirectX 9.0, the WinFast GeForce card mentioned earlier and the CPU is an Intel Pentium 4cpu,2.4GHz and Windows is XP Professional Version 2002. I haven't a clue as to "Patch Levels".
I went into MSTS folder and went through the Mprofile procedure. I also used Help and Support and set Trains to run on the old Windows ME program. I have followed your collective advice also disabled Norton Internet Security Professional and Norton Anti Virus Auto Protect as well as shutting down any other program so that Trains could run on its own. This seemed to improve the operation to the extent that FPS varied from 37-38 to a low of 10-15. FPS did NOT drop to zero as it did when I first encountered the problem.
I have e-mailed Leadtek.com.tw to see if an updated driver is available but as yet not received a reply.
Once again, thank you for your help.
Kind Regards to you all. Boris

RE: FPS Frames per second

Giday Boris,Derek from Melbourne here. You amount of ram is good.
Compared to 98, XP is very hard on a computer.
I see nothing in your configuration that would give a 10 second pause.
Have you ever defragged your drive? start | help | defrag will tell you how to start it in XP (I run win2000)So it looks like NAV or NIS was the culprit, Otto wins the prize. Don't worry leadtech about the driver, www.nvidia.com will have any driver you want. nVidia cards use what is called a 'unified' driver, ie they all use the same driver and it is written by nVidia.

G'day Bob, 3FPS must be hard to live with. That was originally my major problem which was only fixed when I bought the WinFast GeForce card. I have found numerous problems with MSTS where activities don't work as described. One would think that with so many thousands of MSTS operators that Microsoft would relieve our frustrations and bring out an effective update.

Make that about 1 Million copies sold.Microsoft can't fix the problem as they don't have the source code, the source code is owned by Kuju, and M$ won't give Kuju enough money for it.And in any case the original 14 programmers are all over the world now, with 2 of them in Melbourne at the moment.
