LAST EDITED ON Jun-13-04 AT 10:03 PM (EDT)

Try Ad-Aware. I've never used Spybot so maybe they are similar, but it's worth a try. The last time I had a major problem with Spyware it hijacked all of IE, preventing me from loading any websites. I ended up just formatting the whole system and starting over again. Edit--Didn't see the above post when I started.-----------------------------ISearch- WTF – image 2

The current version of SPYBOT is now 1.3, and there is also a fairly recent new build of Adaware ( .181, as I recall).I make use of both, and have also taken a look at Pest Patrol, and found it very impressive too.In any case make sure even when you have the most recent version of the program that you also check for Updates to the spyware data files that the program uses. They are just as important to download as virus signature files with anti-virus programs. As a further preventative, consider installing the Google toolbar, which I trust, since it does include a pop-up blocker. Another fine idea is to switch to other browsers, such as Mozilla, which include pop up blocks. The reason for this being that some spyware first presents itself from a pop-up window. "Hey, want some free candy? Then download this ..."

RE: ISearch- WTF

I just ran Adware, found 500 things Spybot didn't find. I scanned the list, ISEARCH was one of em This ISEARCH has a popup blocker... But it blocks windows that you click on to open. Such as the MLT forums when you click from the homepage. It is gone now. Thanks very much guys!
I still don't know how these things weasel there way onto my system, but its sure nice to be rid of them.

>I still don't know how these things weasel there way onto my
>system, but its sure nice to be rid of them. You use HTML and JAVA to browse the web, correct? Well these files
(which used to be downloaded with off-site ad banners) use the same
controls to hijack your computer. The reason Isearch is called a BHO
(Browser Helper Object) even though it doesn't help anything is
because they appear just like regular toolbars to IE. (Like your
Google toolbar, or the toolbars in IE.) That's how the system
accepts them. Email me and I'll give you links to more software that actually
works. Then I'd email Spybot and ask them why they missed 500
objects on your system? Christopher Tarana

Fair enough! Browser Hijack Blaster (http://www.wilderssecurity.com) is my second line of defense. It runs in the systray and if spyware tries to change your internet settings, home page or install a BHO it notifies you as soon as it happens and in most cases removes the object and resets your IE settings. This is generally a good sign you need to exit the web and run AdAware.

Hijack This! http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip gets rid of toolbars and other BHO's that effect IE. Use this when links to whole servers (like www.topcities.com) don't work anymore. It generally means your browser has been hijacked and attempts to log onto those websites are being reflected to another. Lastly, Regcleaner (www.jv16.org), is a really powerful tool that lets you edit registry entries. It lists them based on age (old vs new) so if something gets around AdAware you can remove the registry entries manually with this. You can even save them to be restored if a problem with the computer occurs but I don't recommend that.

I recommend downloading any of the plugins for AdAware they recommend for your OS (Win98 or WinXP), these make it easier for AdAware to clean the system.

In the old days of the internet, banner ads hosted on the website were usually just pictures. Nowadays they are often animated with Java, hosted on other servers, and when downloaded to your computer while browsing a site can be a vector for spyware to enter your computer. Personally I consider that trespassing, but the guys that run these wholesale internet advertising companies disagree with me. Now that companies like Google and Altavista are offering toolbars that have pop-up blockers to stop Java windows from opening the spyware companies are going low-tech. I'm starting to see more pop-ups that are regular IE URLs that open a webpage in a new window. That webpage has the ad materials or links and any other stuff the host wants to ride along.

RE: ISearch- WTF

If you go to their website they have a link that you can click on that removes this from your computer. Not sure if it puts anything else there but it does remove the pop-up and browser helper object that has been installed.

RE: ISearch- WTF

SpyBot versus AdAware. Personally I like SpyBot better because it has found items that AdAware missed on my computer, but I use BOTH of them. The important thing to notice is that they both update their databases regularly and they both have update buttons. Don't think by using those buttons you are just checking for a rare update of the whole implementation.Like your antivirus software, you should check for updates at least every week or two.

RE: ISearch- WTF

I use Spybot AND Ad-aware. They both find things that the other one misses sometimes. Also, I just activated a feature on Spybot that I'd been ignoring for months. I think it's the "Immune" feature. It watches for BHOs and the like, and asks you if you want to let them install (then, you of course say, "NO"). There are several sites that I didn't realize were installing crap on my machine that Spybot has identified for me. Intellicast is one of the more widely known ones. It tries to install something almost every time. Use Spybot and Ad-Aware together. They help cover each others' weaknesses.

Another great program I use in conjunction with the above is called Spyware Guard. This one actually blocks the BHO from even getting onto your system. It will intercept it and warn you that a BHO is trying to get in and asks you if you will accept it or remove it.It has saved me many a browser hijacking.Get it here

RE: ISearch- WTF

Even though you didn't use the actual words, was it REALLY necessary to use the shorthand for the unacceptable language? Why couldn't you just ask the question without the extra stuff?I have very little respect for people that use this kind of language in a casual conversation and just as little for seeing it, even in abbreviated form (!), on a message board that is read by children! Yes, some of our readers are under 12 years old!!!Regardless of the age of the reader, it's offensive and is not appropriate for postings on these forums. Please use better judgment in future postings so we can try to maintain a "G" rating around here. Thanks for the moment to soapbox a bit...Now, to answer your question...iSearch is a downloadable toolbar that you probably didn't realize you had selected on some website. Your best bet is to uninstall your web browser, look in the Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and remove the browser and (if it's listed) the iSearch toolbar. Finally, do a search on your drive(s) for iSearch and delete all contents of any directory AND the directory itself to get it off you system.JBD

RE: ISearch- WTF

I had this problem before....the same that Chris had.......but be careful some of the spyware can open up ports and allow back door trojans (well at least some are) or viruses to get it and screw up your computer it is best to have spybot and ad-aware and the latest up-date of Norton Anti-Virus and a firewall so that you won't have any of these nasty problems coming in and invading your privacy and taking over your web browser or computer.

RE: ISearch- WTF

I'm sorry, but I disagree. The use of actual or implied profanity just isn't acceptable as far as I'm concerned. Clearly you were concerned but would you use that language in front of your or anyone else's child? I just don't see there is ANY time that it's appropriate OR necessary in public (whether in real-life or online). If something like that came up in my forum I'd have killed the message as soon as I saw it...JBD

RE: ISearch- WTF

I would not say that in front of a 5-6 year old, but listen to any 10+ year old at school or away from their parents talk and you'll see that they swear more then you would even think. And there is a fine line between implied and actual profanity. Who knows F'n could be Fricken. If I said the F word that is a different story. But I didn't so this is just sending this informative thread down the toilet. Ok, so you've never said the F word when someone cut you off on the hiway? Or swore after missing a train photo or even at those people who give you viruses? Give me a break...

That's still no excuse. It sets a very poor example. Yes, I do hear it in school and when I do the kids gets written up! I'm out of this one now...With people with this kind of attitude about it it's no wonder that the kids think it's perfectly acceptable!
