I live near Gettysburg PA and was wondering if anyone knows of any good places nearby to get some good shots of trains. All I ever see is maybe 1 train a week in Hanover PA as I pass through but no more than that.Only other place I know of is in Harrisburg but those are near the Amtrak station. The train that comes through Hanover is a solid yellowish tan with something &O on the side and is usually hauling CSX or Chessie cars behind it.

You could try the East Side of Gettysburg where the tracks run along side Route 30. There is an open area where you can get a good picture of CSX freights. It's right across from a car dealership.P.S. - Sorry for the poor image quality, it's a scanned print.
Man I lived in PA for most of my life Intel two years ago. That pic brings back a lot of memories of the mountain terrain to me of my old home town. Not trying to start a flame war and no I did not live near Gettysburg at all.
All ways remembering BigBoy 4023 and her run through Green River Wyoming on train 359 a 600 car mixed freight with a yellow Union Pacifc caboose on the rear.
If you want volume, take the short drive up to Harrisburg. Too many locations up there to see the NS in action, but the NS more or less wraps around the area, branching off in at least 5 or 6 directions, to Hagerstown Md., Perryville Md., Altoona, Pa., Allentown, Pa., and the city itself. Nice vantage points up at the north end of Enola Yard, including a bridge built for railfans that has wide sidewalks and camera portholes built in. A mile north of there is the famed Rockville Bridge.Chris Bogley Syracuse New York www.msnusers.com/AshleyPhotography www.msnusers.com/cnytrainsWholesale Route Sales / Production, Krispy Kreme, Syracuse NYAmtrak "American Eagle" Activity Pack, Summer 2004
Rockville's great, and its close to Gettysburg. If you want to go a farther head to Altoona (across from the Amtrak Station). I'll have some these places and more in a bit. Conrail rules!!!
