A large fire in Southern California destroyed timbers on the SP/UP Coast Line, and it is out of service. It is my understanding the local water system failed due to no electricity, so the UP sent down a couple of locos towing tank cars filled with water to be used for fire fighting purposes. If anyone is in the area, snap a couple photos if you can.John

RE: Gaviota Fire

I live in Santa Barbara, about 35 miles south. The fire is about 20% contained, having burned 6,500+ acres, with the cooler/foggy mornings helping the firefighters. The Gaviota trestle was damaged. Most of the stopped northbounds were headed back to the LA area, for a detour over Tehachapi. That, of course, includes the UP's version of the oilcans, so that should be of interest to any foamers at the loop!

RE: Gaviota Fire

As reported in todays paper: firefighters are looking for full containment by Thursday. Has burned about 7,500 acres. UP spokesman say the Santa Barbara sub will remain closed for "at least a couple more days" until they are able to repair the Gaviota trestle.
