Jan-13-02, 06:14 PM (EST) 1. "RE: education" Well I am 15 and in my freshman year, and I know this. You can either go to the Modoc RR Academy in Califiorna, which from the sounds of 100% job placement in 2000 and 2001 sounds good. Or you can go to the railroad whenever you see job openings

"RE: education" Many years ago (20 to be exact), I asked the same questain to my friends on the Burlington Northern, The answer I got wasnt what I was looking for The Engineer I asked just smiled and said, Well Dave it like this You got to learn how to smoke cigaretts, drink lots or coffie and you got to learn how to lie. and he and the rest of the crew justed laughed as the exited the depot to go to work. You can check out the UNION PACIFIC website and they will give you a job description, instrutions on how to apply and they also post new Job openings for all over their system.David Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-15-02, 10:14 AM (EST) 5. "RE: education" Really you don't need to worry about it until you're ready to go to college. There are no applicable high school classes since even shop classes are too car specific to really apply. You could check out various training programs offered by schools and community colleges to check if there is anything you can do now, but I doubt there is. I know that Philadelphia Community College has Conductor programs and assume that that is true in some other cities. With most railroad jobs you need to get in at the bottom (laborer or loader) and work your way up since they like to promote from within.-Andy

Jan-15-02, 10:56 AM (EST) 6. "RE: education" When you are ready to go to college you may want to check into Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. They have 3 fields of study related to the railroad industry: Railroad Industrial Technology: Welding

"RE: education" If the title of this post were something other than "education", I would stay silent.I understand that spelling and grammar are not really that important when posting messages. However..."serton", "you got to learn" (twice)...Whether it's railroading or any other career, a decent grasp of spelling and grammar are going to be very important to you... Jan-15-02, 05:12 PM (EST) 9. "RE: education" Okay I'm not from your neck of the woods. I'm a 61 year old railwayman, now retired, and have worked in the Railways (Railroad) most of my life, and enjoyed every bit of it.I agree with Stevew. As he said, a reasonable handle of Reading, Writing and Arithmitic is very handy and will hold you in good stead anywhere. The MAIN thing what is really NEEDED, is the DESIRE to WANT to become a Train Engineer (or whatever) and be PREPARED to put in the EFFORT that is required, and to DO the TIME to achieve this.
In other words, set your sights on that particular goal, and GO for it.
But also remember, there WILL be pitfalls along the way to test you.Old saying:- No pain, No gain, No train engineer or whatever.
This applies to ALL things in life as we all find out as we live out our time.
