BNSF's Seligman Sub – image 1

Hey guys,
Anyone here live in Arizona? Anyways a week from this thursday I will be heading out to Arizona. I will be staying in Carefree, AZ but i will be traveling to Flagstaff to railfan the BNSF Seligman Sub. I was just wondering if the station is easy to find in town? And if the mainline is very busy or not? Thank You,
Ryan

The station isn't to hard to find. The main line is usually busy. If you get a chance you might want t go to Williams AZ. It is about twenty minutes outsude of Flag. Santa Fe's (ooop's that dates me) goes through Williams, and the Grand Canyon RR.is there. It is an operating tourist steam RR. George

As said above, the station is easy to get to, as it is used by Amtrak, and there are a number of locations at and nearby the stations to photograph / videotape, what have you. Very nice town.To the east and west, the line runs near I-40, so most exits will find you near the tracks. East of town the line is north of I-40 and is mostly wide open country, but to the west, the line is mostly to the south, and in the lush pine trees, making for some very nice photos. Again, most exits will put you at the tracks.I suggust either downloading some maps from mapquest, or picking up a map when you get in town. Very busy BNSF line with upwards of 70 frieghts a day, if not more. Becasue of that, use caution. While Flagstaff sits at over 7000 feet, the trains can still be hauling it in both directions. Your trip sounds like fun! BTW, there's an excellent pictoral/article on Seligman in the new (April/May/June) issue of The Railroad Press. Some great photos, both vintage and contemporary. Check it out if you can.

>there: Hahahaha!! Good one.I used to drive tour buses all over the west...and would do a 12-day tour that spent one night in Flagstaff at a Holiday Inn at the west end of town. The tour groups were from Manchester, England -- and had their own tour guides. I used to love getting this one female guide, she'd always get up the next morning and the first thing she'd say was "Those BLOODY engine drivers and their damn horns!!"The tracks were right behind the place. I used to call ahead when I was doing this tour and ask them to place me in a room facing the tracks. Never had a problem getting one. And slept like a baby with the trains going by a few hundred feet from the hotel.

It hass very heavy (boring BNSF) traffic as I recall, your best bet would probably be in mid day. Thats when I watched trains on my vacation there.

I live in Kingman Arizona between Seligman and Needles Calif. I do not think this is a boring main line at all. Every train coming through has different power on it and most of the tome lately we have between 100 and 120 a day. Last August while downtown I even got a good picture of BNSF 4723.
