>I am confused as to the Western Maryland as being gone as it seem to be alive and well. What are you on??? The WM merged with C&O and B&O to form Chessie System back in '72.There are how ever people here who love the WM, such as Tim and Jeffery. I love the SP, Erie Lackamoney and Santa Fe...all 3 are long gone...but they are still alive in my heart! >Mike Forster<

Click to send message via ICQ

WM was bought by the B&O in the mid 50's and completely merged into the B&O in 1975. (up untill this point they were not considered part of Chessie System)

RE: WESTERN MARYLAND gone? Confusing,

Hi Mike,Thanks for the clarification. Speaking from the UK it's not that easy to be familiar with all of the train companies in the US. I sure envy you living in one of the most fabulous places on earth: fantastic weather, and fantastic beaches with fantastic surf, but I suppose it can't all be perfect, which reminds me...what is that train in your banner pic?Mike <>WESTERN MARYLAND gone? There are still a couple of WM engines that run at the WMSR. They have a WM GP30, a WM 2-8-0 class H-7, and until recently, they had a couple of ALCo's.
BTW, ASR_Q301: since I wasn't on your list of WM fans, what does that make me?

RE: WESTERN MARYLAND gone? Confusing,

As Paul Harvey would say, "Now the rest of the story" The Western Maryland never owned any GP30's. They went straight from the F7's and GP9's to the GP35. Also, The story about the Baltimore & Ohio buying the Western Maryland in the 50's is not 100% correct. The B&O and C&O started buying WM stock in the late 20's. When several of Western Maryland's interchange partners saw the move by B&O and C&O to purchase the Western Maryland, they started to complain to the ICC about the stock purchases, fearing loss of connections. The ICC ordered that the stock be placed into a trust account until further notice. In 1963 the C&O purchased the B&O, but it was still business as usual and the stock remained in a trust account. The only difference was now, they owned almost 100% of the WM stock. In 1972 the C&O and B&O were merged into a new corporation called the Chessie System. At this time the Chessie System asked the ICC to release the WM stock. Since the Northeast was falling apart because of the Penn Central bankruptcy, only a few railroad asked the ICC for interchange protection, Namely but not limited to the Norfolk & Western (ex P&WV) and the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroads. The ICC approved and in 1975 the WM was folded into the Chessie System. Some trackage remains to this day. The most famous part containing Helmsetters Curve is operated by the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.

RE: WESTERN MARYLAND gone? Confusing,

Yes, I think it's neat to see what a GP30 might have looked like in WM paint. I just wanted everybody to know it's a 12" to the foot prototype freelance Another cool thing about the WMSR is the 2-8-0 is originally from the LS&I, yes the same railroad that Maple Leaf Tracks released a route for, just thought that was pretty neat as well.Take care,
Rich S.

okay.. the SCL GP30's must have come from the Seaboard Air Line. I don't find any pictures of an Atlantic Coast Line GP30.

My appologies Mike...I didnt realise you were from the UK! >I sure envy you living in one of the most fabulous places on earth: fantastic weather, and fantastic beaches with fantastic surf,Fantastic women and lots of sport too!! Today is beautiful!>which reminds me...what is that train in your banner pic? That train is the Perth to Sydney "Indian Pacific" cruise train operated twice a week both out of Sydney and out of Perth (2 trainsets) by Great Southern Railway. GSR have a contract with freight hauler "Pacific National". All GSR passenger trains are hauled by General Electric Dash9-40-CVI's AKA: "NR Class". (Best locos down here) BTW: Its good to hear these English Electric locomotives coming back into operation down here. They sound fantastic...like your 37 Class.>Mike Forster<
