I was scared to death when I heard they were buying the ES40DC. That's better than the Dash 9!

WOA!!!!How the heck did I miss this post?!?!?! That is one awesome looking locomotive!! I prefer the Gevo's in NS's new scheme rather than the Dash9's.If these are ES40DC's, how come there is the large AC inverter bank on the side of the locomotive? Is this something to do with the Evolution Series? Thanks for the GOOD news. MSTS?? >Mike Forster<

The answer I heard, true or not, was because their motive power people were not satified with the reliability of the 4400 horsepower engine, the price of the extra 400HP, or something along those lines. The line I heard once was "their conservative motive power policy" or something, which sounds more like a GE Transportation reason as to why Norfolk wanted 4000 instead of 4400.I bet, if you got right down to it, they preferred to work with rounded numbers in the calculation of horsepower.

RE: NS ES40DC Have A Look

Not meaning to cause a flame...BECAUSE NS IS CHEAP! Conrail would have went 4400 but NS doesn't want to pay the extra money for anything. They got rid of class lights of ex CR engines because they didn't want to pay money for bulbs!!!

Seems like they could be helpful in the Buckeye hump yard. Heard from a friend the slug unit lash-ups hit a NS truck in the yard at night and injuried an employee. They don't run with their lights on at all in that yard. Seems kind of stupid to me not to run even with your dims on. Maybe if they would have had the class lights the ns employee would have seen the slugs coming.

>They got rid of class lights of ex CR engines because
>they didn't want to pay money for bulbs!!! By FRA rules, any light on a locomotive must be in working order, ie: if one burns out, you must replace it, whether you use them or not. Why would NS spend money to maintain a lighting system that they don't use? That's just common sense? CSX on the other hand, is stupid, because they keep the lights working. They have no need for them, yet they maintain them. Why? Because the hoggers like to run them in the fog, like little, red demon eyes (that's the only time I ever see them lit) Chris Denbow - Baltimore, MD

>I wonder why the NS won't use the 4400 hp units like
>everyone else? Because they use less fuel and are more reliable when run at 4000hp.The prime mover in a D9-40CW is the exact same one as in a D9-44CW...hell the loco itself is the same too. If NS really wanted to, they could make every single one of their D9-40CW's 4400hp with very little difficulty. As for "why does the ES40CW have an invertor cabinet?"....it's not an invertor cabinet, that's why. GE felt that if they use the exact same carbody, they'll save even more money, and they're right. It's not like the railroad really cares if there's a big wall of sheet metal right behind the cab.DanAbsolute power corrupts absolutely.

>Because the 400 extra horsepower does nothing except increase top speed on that chasis...
The 4000s generate just as much Tractive Effort as the 4400s and the benefits of the extra 10% (400hp) are so marginal to NS that the increases in fuel economy and reliability more than offset them...Now the cheap part comes in with NS not buying the ACs....
They are saving about 25% per locomotive by sticking with DC on purchase price alone... Never mind the whole spare parts/shop training issue.... They have apparently decided that there is not enough benefit to NS to switch to AC traction... It's just bidness...Maybe if CSX looked at their purchases in a similar fashion they might be in a little better shape ????????
Or at least have a little more money to spend on their physical plant, eh?

Hey Mike! The AC Inverter bank is actually empty. Yep, completely empty. Now, as for NS HP rating, remember, NS does have a switch in the cab of the locomotive to switch between 4000 and 4400 HP.There is no price difference at all in HP, it's a simple matter of telling the computer that the engine produces 4000HP, it's the same prime mover as you see in the normal D9s and AC44s. While I am not surprised the ES40DC's are 4000HP, it'll be interesting to find out if it also has a switch to change between 4000-4400HP

Never Mind, now that I look at it, the older NS units have a switch to toggle between 4000 and 4400HP, it's buried in the electrical cabinet. Newer units also have the switch but it could either be located in the electrical cabinet or on the control stand. It's against NS practice (and rules probably) to use it, but there are at least a few units in the 9500 series that are rated at 4400HP and load up to the 4500 range.

LOLJust thought of a new phrase--> "No flame intended."NS might be cheap - but that isn't necessarily bad. Considering they must obey basic business rules, some people might take that to mean they're better at business, and that means they will be more successful.Just my 2 cents. Never worked for them, so I really can't judge. But as a foamer, I'd rather they maintain the roadbed than replace lights they don't use. Mark

Also I herd that sidings on these lines were not enough to dictate using 4400hp units 4000hp suits them fine. Whats 400hp anyway. cnw8717

CSX602, I hear you on that!Running, in fog, or at night, those class lights look awesome...Notice CSX pretty much kept the markers on the ex CR units, while when CSX was formed in 86, most engine class lights were patched over......wonder why they didn't do the same in 1999? Anyways, 8748 has only one front marker, because some people don't know how to wait a a rr crossing -Jeffrey

What sort of horn does that GEVO have?? It looks like a K5LA - with reversed horns. But I thought NS use a lot of P-5's on thier locos. It would be interesting to see a GEVO in CN or CP colours! >Mike Forster<

That is a K5LA. The only units with P5's are the old Southern units. But some of the older P5's are on C40-9's, C40-9W's, and SD70 standard cab.
