Thanks for the links. I do believe that some security issues for trains needs to be addressed but, it never ceases to amaze me how the word “Safe” always gets thrown in. I ride the rails a minimum of three days a week and it never crossed my mind that I could be involved in an incident, because I have a better chance of being broadsided by some a$$ running a red light on the highway, then being a casualty of a terrorists attack. I don't feel safe, not because of terrorists on MARTA, but howw fast the go, I always feel like the train is coming straight off the tracks. Those people are friggin speeddemons!
Well I am Canadian and Toronto has commuter train service called GO Transit. I know first hand they have a major security issue! I was hired as a freight conductor in Toronto with one of the major Canadian class 1's to find out that GO Transit uses CN and CP engineers and conductors to operate their passenger trains. First of all as an employee at the time we never had photo i.d., no one ever checked our i.d. There really wasn't anyone stopping anyone from walking around the trains at the holding and maintenance yards. I didn't know what to think about that. On one hand I was proud and happy to be Canadian and maybe because of that terrorism isn't as big as a problem here, but why take that risk or attitude, it can happen to anyone anywhere! Then they had us train for only one week. I think the training was grousely inadequate! Working with public is a whole new ballgame! They didn't give us any training as to how to professionaly talk to, or handle passengers! Then as a new person you might only get called for a GO train once or twice a year so you forget all the things they expect you to do. If I was a passenger on one and knew my conductor has only about a year on the job mainly as a freight conductor that would really scare me!!!
I feel safe and I live in the NYC metro area! The railroads here haveguys on all the trains. Being a railfan I ahve to say 2 things, First "Its about time they did this" and "Oh $***, now we have to worry about getting arrested from public property again".

I didn't know what to think about that.I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to call you out on that one.Granted I've never walked in from the "proper entrance" to Willowbrook, but I always get the "GOstapo" coming to check me out whenever I'm around the property. Not only that, but a friend of mine WHO WORKS FOR GO TRANSIT was taken away in the back of a van once for being on the property...WITH HIS ID VISIBLE!If anything, GO is too anal about security.Dan Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Well, I'm telling you what I went through! I worked for CP last summer and part of being a conductor for CP in Toronto is to also work GO Trains. I WORKED there too. The only enforcement I saw were transit cops here and there. Never was I checked, or did I see anyone else.
Well I have been ruffed up a couple times by a railroad police and the results didnt come out too bad, taking that I got a arguement started. Now there's such a thing as security and then sometimes you can go overboard with it. And I beleive that it is leaning towards the overboard side now.
How safe? We're second only to Aeroflot!!!!111111!!!!!!!!111111!one!!1!one!!!!11111111111one111!!"The Genesis and the F59PHI are the lamest locomotives Amtrak has ever operated. Accept it and move on. Hug an F40."
