Open letter to sound developers and MSTS users! – image 1

LAST EDITED ON Mar-21-04 AT 08:50 PM (EST)

Okay, I admit that i've contributed literally nothing to this community, and my programming skills are lacking. I've tried to make activities, with little success. But, I haven an idea for something that I believe will benefit the train-sim community as a whole.Would it be possible to create some sort of program, that will allow easy, quick alteration of MSTS sounds? Programs have been written to ease the pains (?) of using the AE to build consists. Programs have been written that make our background weather much more realistic. Even a small programs have been written to make those damn menus bigger and easier to navigate.Take this into consideration, using a pull down or drop down menu, I could easily alter a CN SD40 to have the SD40 sounds from the SP Heritage pack, The MLT Horn from KHP 2, and the road noise from the SP Heritage pack. Or, using a point and click interface, change the sounds of Gaetan Belanger's VIA Train set to the Amfleet sounds released by NALW.I don't believe copyright would be a huge issue here, because, basically, if you don't have the sounds, then you can't use them. However, Some authors feel that if you want to make alterations to their files, then they should be consulted for approval. I agree with this policy, and so should everyone else out of respect for the original work. But, I think that a program of this nature would be highly beneficial, instead of burying oneself in the .eng and .wag files.Again, it's only an idea, and I would have no idea where to start with a program of this nature. I submit this to the train-sim community in general. A Big thank you goes to the Train-sim community, especially the developers who take time out of their lives to bring such neat little goodies to make OUR game a little bit better.Submitted to the Community.

RE: Open letter to sound developers and MSTS users!

I think that on the whole the sort of MSTS users frequenting these Forums/Fora prefer to do their own Tinkering with Views, Sounds, ect. It's more FUN in my HO ! As for the less MSTS informed average user, yes, there is a lot like what you suggest which could and should be provided in the next versions of MSTS to widen it's appeal. But it's also a question of Development Costs and Return on with Commercial vendors and time and effort with FREEWARE creators.KOSMOS is just one such Utility which really should be part of MSTS itself and so could be many others like the SHAPE VIEWER in the ROUTE EDITOR and a better CONSISTS Creator/Editor in the ACTIVITIES EDITOR along the lines of CONBUILDER.But for MICROSOFT the Name of the Game is to make MEGABUCKS and we shall get as little or as much for our money as they can get away with ! Time will tell, as I keep saying ! O t t o
