Do you support the greatest hobby? – image 1

Well in Ottawa I went to visit two local hobby shops.Hobby House (prolly one of the best in Canada) on Montreal Rd.
Hobby Center on Bank St.Marathon does not have a hobbyshop, it never has and probably never will. Marathon is a small town with 3 gold mines (Hemlo) that have soon lost their juice and then we have the smallest kraft pulp mill in Canada and it is the most unique (overseas boat, north american boat, truck, & train) The mill only employees like 250+ people. So 4700- people in a town is not large. The closest hobby shop to me is Thunder Bay Thom Thumb about 3:15 minutes away down a twisty highway. Or head eastbound for about 7-8 hours to a ripoff place in Sudbury. So I was happy to spend the money here...What did I buy? All prices are in Canadian fundsThe 2004 Canadian Trackside Guide...AKA the bible...$25
Athearn Genesis 60' FMC SS-DD VCY/GWS...$35.95 wow awsome car
Athearn SW1000 dummy BNSF? (I need a American switcher)(it is dumb, needs someone else to pull it ) $32.95All of those were from Hobby House LTD.
A VIA train just went pastAthearn RTR Canadian Pacific 50' flat with 45' CNW trailer..They had 4 there and the CNW looked so cool... Marathon High School's mascot is a Falcon $23.98
Boley 53' Stoughton grey trailer $6.00
Athearn 85ft A/P flat in CP Rail $16.00
Athearn 53ft Jindo container red CDAU $13.00Those from Hobby CenterThe overall bill dont matter Here is a shot of everything...Have any of you's bought some new goodies for your model trains?Chris Wilson

RE: Do you support the greatest hobby?

I feel fortunate to have 2 good hobby shops within about 5 miles of the house. Last new stuff I bought for the layout was this pair of Atlas hoppers, but that was a while ago. I have lost some interest in the hobby the past few years but I recently joined a local club in the hopes of getting back into it by spending some time with other hobbyists.Do you support the greatest hobby? – image 5Cliff

Great looking scene, Cliff! Like you, I too have grown tired of scale modeling...There aren't too many groups near me, so it may be some time before I get back to it.BTW, nice to see you're still hangin' around the forums. Cheers!

RE: Do you support the greatest hobby?

Marc, you really should find a club. After a year and a half of modeling on my own I joined a local club modeling and providing a museum quality railroad display, including restoring a steam era caboose. In the basement of our local museum. Its great to hang out with some like minded train types and learn from others skills. Search out a club, they would be lucky to get a member like yourself. If you want to move to Canada we would sign ya up in a second.

RE: Do you support the greatest hobby?

Wow! Nice stuff guys. Nothing really new for me, besides a Proto 1000 RDC CPRail and a Atlas GP38 CPRail. Them too cost me close to $220 CND, but luckily, everything was 40 % off. Unfortunately, the store was closing. So no close buys hobby shops for me either.

RE: Do you support the greatest hobby?

I have that cab car and I WANT that engine The funny thing is that I don't even have a train layout anymore, my cab car just sits on a piece of track on top of my dresser as a decoration.Do you support the greatest hobby? – image 13Dave Reage - Beta Tester

RE: Do you support the greatest hobby?

I have to say that MSTS has taken me out of scale modeling a little but I still do it. There is one major hobby shop around, that is King's Hobby in Austin, Tx. They are about a 30 min. drive away. I am looking at the Kato AC4400 right now, but I already have 2 SD90/43MACs for the coal drags and an Athearn (blue box) AC4400, so I am not sure if I am going to get one or not. Good looking models

RE: Do you support the greatest hobby?

Lark Spur Line really went downhill in my books when they quit carrying N scale. I was just there a couple weeks ago on my way home from Quebec, and while it's still not a bad 'HO' shop I've seen much better.

No, I don't support "The World's Greatest Hobby" promo. In fact, since the advent of MSTS into my scheme of things, I have not significantly been a model railroader since. Seeing some of the current prices of model railroading in this thread, and seeing how much some of you are spending in it, makes me realize again what a great value the current MSTS payware market offers.MSTS has got to be one of the most cost effective ways to enjoy the hobby of trains.Andre MingVisit V Scale Creations Forum at: http://www.3DTrains.comDo you support the greatest hobby? – image 24
