WIN XP Pro - Tweaking Guides / Sites – image 1

Morning all,So WIN XP Pro is up and running. Everything runs great and there are really not any issues I can find BUTSince installing XP Pro my online game pings have all shot up. Game servers that I used to get 50-80 pings on I am now getting 100-130.Now I realize that is not alot, but in a First Person Shooter it can make all the difference in the world. Are there any good sits / or tips you can provide to speed up / streamline WIN XP ?Here's the system specsAthalon 1.4
256 MB PC-133 Ram
GeForce FX5200 128MB video cardThe specs shouldn't make a difference in my pings as it seems that it was XP Pro that created the spike in my ping.Any help is appreciatedLater

Tim,how many processes are running in the background? It could be your connection (Dialup, DSL, Cable, Satelite, etc.) that's causing it.Dave

I'm guessing by the pings you used to get you're on some kind of broadband? Never knew anyone on dialup who could make pings that low....Find your connection in the Network and Dial-Up Connections, and check its Properties to see if something called the QoS Packet Scheduler is installed. If it is, highlight it and click the Uninstall button below to remove it. It's installed by default in WinXP and can suck something like 20% of your bandwidth when running. It's of no use to a home user and just absorbs network resources, so lose it if you've got it. I know bandwidth and ping are two different things, but just one suggestion to tweak your connection.Another thing I found that has helped the quality of my connection for gaming is tweaking the TCP Receive Window (RWIN) setting in the registry. Go to http://www.broadbandreports.com to the Tools section and download a little utility called DrTCP. It requires no installation and gives you an easy interface to tweak the RWIN value (and some other settings) without having to muck around in the registry. On my WinXP Pro machine I found the RWIN value was too low by default, boosting it made my connection much more consistent without a lot of stops and starts while downloading. The Broadband Reports site has a good tweak section in general too; lots of hints plus an explanation of what you're tweaking and how to find a good balance so you don't set the different registry values too high or too low.Mr. F

There's no 'I' in 'Team'...there's no 'U' either...
