There were no B units on the Rio Grande. They just had the 3 Locos with cabs. Numbers 4001,4002,4003Those will be a great addition to the MSTS Roster.

No B units of the KM were manufactured. Only 2 types were built. The 1961 was a road unit and the 1963 models were road switchers with a narrowed nose and Alco trimount trucks.
D&RGW had 3 1961 models #4001-4003, these were sold to SP in 1964 and renumbered 9021-9023.Cyndi

RE: Krauss Maffei hydraulic DRG&W Locomotive

someone asked a while back, how these engines ran.Well, I never got to exactly explain it, since that post went by the side, but I hope I can offer some explanation now.First things first, you have to understand a KEY point in these engines. Their throttle was not notched. Rather it was a smooth operation.Basically, the engines operated in the same way as "Hydrostatic" lawn tractors. In these tractors, grease (or oil if you prefer) is inside the transmission. The harder you press forward on the speed control, the more speed the main drive plate turns. This plate has several little blades on it, similar in form to a propellor on a jet plane. The faster this blade turns, the more the oil moves, and presses on another set of blades around a shaft. (leading to the drive shaft). So, the faster it moves, (the main one) by the movement of the oil, the faster the drive shaft turns. While this is a very SIMPLISTIC explanation, that's basically how the KM's worked. Oddly enough, they could have made a B unit, but never did for some reason. One of these engines survived under SP rule, having its PM removed and the front end modified so they could use it to video tape the tracks for later use in a simulator of all things. I suspect, the engine is still floating around somewhere, but with UP's record...it's anyone's guess.

>The SP Camera car is long gone
That statement is untrue.........The camera car is currently at the CSRM here in Sacramento. The hood and cab sheet metal has been removed and the frame is sitting outside next to two ATSF Steamers. Here is a link to the museums site and about mid way through the page you will find the KM listedhttp://www.csrmf.org/doc.asp?id=153

>Yes, It ran as an A-B-A Set. WRONG!!!!!Krauss-Maffei did NOT make B-units for the ML4000 diesel hydraulics. All three of Rio Grande's were A-units, as were all three of Southern Pacific's.

RE: Krauss Maffei hydraulic DRG&W Locomotive

Another intersting hydraulic locomotive SP had was one that resembled an alco, but had drive shafts in place of the turbines. It also had a very odd wheel arangement where the first wheels were ofset from the last ones in a truck. kinda like this o-o--o #### o--o-o (#### being the fuel tank.)
