It's in this month's issue of Trains Magazine. A permanent station has been designed, but it will not open until 2006 when the site is redeveloped.

By the way, PATH is a separate entity from New York City Transit. PATH is run by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
New York City Transit is run by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.R1/9 cars are running from Columbus Circle over the Manhattan Bridge to Brighton Beach and around the system on 2/28 and 29. The train departs at 10:30AM from the middle platform at the Columbus Circle IND station (A,C,D). Trains will run over both sides of the Manhattan Bridge on both days. The fare is $40 ($20 for children and seniors) and all proceeds benefit the March of Dimes. All fares will be collected onboard the train, so there is no need to make a reservation. Just show up at Columbus Cirle at 9:30AM (if you want a good position on the train) or 10AM at the latest with $40 dollars for fare, a Metrocard, lunch money, and a camera. See here for Feb. 28 and here for Feb. 29.

RE: Changes to NYC Subway!

They have been replaced with the R-142 and R-142A. Personally, I hope the R-160 contract begins construction soon, because I HATE the Hippos (slang for the R-46) my "R" line gets.Stuart D. Guberman

Sorry, but the R46s are gonna be around for a while. The R160s will replace everything through R42 definitely and possibly R44, but even so, the first cars will probably go to Pitken Yard and not Jamaica Yard.
And yes, the redbirds made their last revenue service run on November 3, 2003, and I was lucky enough be on that train. Attached are two pictures I took on that run.
1) The train arrives at Times Square before its final run to Willets Point. Regular trains terminate in Flushing, but it was easier for the TA to pull it into Corona yard this way.
2) This sign was on the motorman's side of the lead car and the opposite side of the trailing car. It depicts the R33WF/R36WF cars in all of their liveries: Worlds Fair, MTA, White, and Redbird.
I went to the inbound side to board a regular train. When it pulled in, it was a set of R62A cars, a stark change from the colorful redbirds. But at least the Times Square end still had a front window.

RE: Changes to NYC Subway!

I realize this. But with allocation the way it currently is, with the R32's retirement from active service with the later arrivals of the R160, it would still mean that a few trains on the "R" would be comprised of R160s (and the next order after that would eliminate the R46s.)Stuart D. Guberman

RE: Changes to NYC Subway!

So is the R160 the smart cars seen on the Discovery Channel's Extreme Enginering show? Were the old trains color coded acorrding to what route they used?

RE: Changes to NYC Subway!

I can't say I've seen the show you're referring to. Plus the R160 hasn't even rolled out of the ALSTOM factory yet, and won't until 2005 at least. But from what I've heard, the "L" line will see CBTC testing later this year, compared to the estimate of at least 2010 only 18 months ago. The R142/142A and 143 were built with options for CBTC control (or so the Bombardier and Kawasaki RailCar websites say.)Stuart D. Guberman
