Dec-23-01, 09:14 PM (EST) "Error message and computer freeze" I'm new to train sim. I've only done a partial install (Marias Pass and Northeast Corridor, due to hard drive space. I have several of the default routes that cause an error message and freeze my computer. "Grain Train though the night is one". The other is the 1.40 minute route, I forget the name. I was wondering if my program is defective, or is this a know fault and maybe a patch is available to fix the problem. I would appreciate any help you can give me before I march it back to the store.

Well without knowing anything at all about your PC since you did not post any sort of detailed system and driver specs and going only on the fact that you must have a teenie weenie HD if you did a partial install (which you should never do anyhow because then most/all add on routes will not work nor will the route editor to it's full potential)... I will guess it's one of the following two (or both):a) Your system is woefully innadequate to play MSTS on (or any other game made since 1997) and should be immeadiately replaced or at the very least a new sound and video card and memory and a HD is needed. A quick bare minimum sys req are: 450MHz processor or faster, 128MB RAM, 32MB Geforce 2, SBLive or non-budget clone, DirectX8.1, 4xCDROM, 2GB HD Space (1 for install, 1 to leave empty for swapfiling on primary drive), Monitor supporting 1024x768x16 or better, etc, etc...b) You need newer drivers for your sound and video cards and possibly other hardware and/or a newer DirectX version. (8.1 is the current)Try B first, then if you still get crashes, try A. That is if you meet the bare minimums in A which even then require you to play with all graphical and sound frills turned down to minimums. At the very least try deleting useless things off your HD so you can do a full install. Also if you ever want to make/use any addon's you will need an additional 5-10GB of HD space beyond what was listed above. You might as well keep the game if you can get it running even minimally. After all, eventually you'll have a newer system that it will run great on.Don't hold your breath for a patch. Older games that are even less stable than MSTS published or even developed directly at MS are still patchless. I think the only games they've ever patched regularly are FlightSim and AgeofEmpires series.-Andy

Dec-24-01, 10:12 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Error message and computer freeze" I guess I should have included my computer specs. P11 366, 6.4gb hard drive with 128 ram and 32 meg ATI Rage Fury Pro Video card.
The program runs fine - the problem is just with a few of the default routes for some reason. I get the error report to send to microsoft and when I send this report that's when the computer freezes. If I don't send the error report, I can just esc to the home page, select a different route and carry on as usual.
I managed to get a full install last night (although my HD is full) and am still experiencing the same problem. I have no problems with other programs. FS2K2 runs fine, as did fs98 and fs2000. That is why my HD is full (flt simming stuff).
I was hoping that this was a known fault, but it dosn't sound like it is. The activity editor works fine. Could the problem be with my disks? If so I'll just do an exchange.
Although I spent my career in the Air Force, I grew up and now live in a small railroad town by the name of Capreol, in Northern Ontario, Canada. My family, for generations, have all been or still are railroaders, as are most of my friends here. I would really like to get this sim working and get involved in the train-sim community. I sure have lots of experience available to help me get going. I am going to upgrade my hard drive. Maybe sooner that later if you figure that is my problem.

Dec-24-01, 01:05 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Error message and computer freeze" If you're having problems on activities with snow, try running the troubleshooter and checking "Snow causes game to crash ..."The troubleshooter is at Start->Programs->Microsoft Games->Train Simulator->Train Simulator Troubleshooter Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-25-01, 11:58 AM (EST) 4. "RE: Error message and computer freeze" Thanks for the help. I updated my video drivers and went to the toubleshooter for the snow problem. All is fine now. Saved me an embarassing trip to exchange my program. Now to get a larger hard drive and I should be in business. Thanks again.Cheers Bill Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
