Dec-23-01, 06:18 PM (EST) "MSTS & Trainz" I tried out Trainz for a few days. At first, I thought that it was easy for me to create routes using Surveyor but I had problems creating curved track using track splines. Surveyor doesn't let me create curved track by entering radius and angle, much like dynamic track in MSTS Route Editor. I can't decide which train simulator is better. I know that MSTS Route Editor is harder to use than Trainz Surveyor for creating routes but in MSTS Route Editor, I know how long straight track is, know the radius and angle of curved track, and know that track switches are ready to use. Dec-23-01, 06:29 PM (EST) 1. "RE: MSTS & Trainz" Theres no button for "Aplly track curve" yet.. But there is an "Get height and a Add height to spline" button and a "Get Gradient and Add Gradient to spline" button. There is also a button for "Get track Curve" ..Now i know you cant apply set curves..But there are rulers in which if one has an idea of radius's and such..then they simply place some rulers of the end of the track to map there curve.. Of course when the curve is finished..this is where the "get curve" button comes in handy..select it and click away on the curves and get the readings of the curve. As for switchs..there are no switchs..There doesnt need to be any because its a simple case of spline to spline.. connect the 2.. tudaaaa. Much easier for yards and turnouts when a 7mtr or a 10mtr just wont do.....I know..ive been there.Enjoy.. I am.Catchya

Dec-23-01, 08:35 PM (EST) 2. "RE: MSTS & Trainz" Quite so... also look at the grid, look at what the radius of the curve is. And there is your curve radius. Comprendez-vous? Or should I go into more depth -Andy

Dec-24-01, 01:28 AM (EST) 3. "RE: MSTS & Trainz" I don't think better is the issue at least for me. I use both sims. At any rate real railroads use easements not constant radius curves. But if you want a constant radius curve use the rulers in Trainz. Set up four rulers equal to the radius of your curve. The first ruler at 0 degrees at the start of your curve to the center of the arc of your curve. The second, third, and fourth rulers at approximately 30, 60, and 90 degree points of your arc. Lay the first piece of track at 0 to 30 degrees, the second at 30 to 60 degrees and the third at 60 to 90 degrees. From reading previous posts of yours I thought the Trainz flexible track approach would be best for you. Maybe you just need to be more patient and try to use the MSTS sectional track approach to build your subway layout. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-24-01, 05:51 AM (EST) 4. "RE: MSTS & Trainz" There is problems with the ruler and track splines:1. The ruler floats a meter or two off the ground.
2. When I rotate one end of the ruler, I change the length of the ruler.
3. The track splines don't work like flexible tracks on model train layouts.Jeffrey. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-24-01, 12:23 PM (EST) 5. "RE: MSTS & Trainz" LAST EDITED ON Dec-24-01 AT 12:23 PM (EST)This morning, I used MSTS Route editor to create new NYCTA BMT 4th Avenue subway route. I used TurboCAD to draw trackwork between Pacific Street and Dekalb Avenue before laying track in MSTS Route Editor. Someone on the www.trainsim.org.uk site told me that Trainz is more like a game than a simulator. I think that I wasted my money on Trainz. Jeffrey. Dec-24-01, 02:10 PM (EST) 6. "RE: MSTS & Trainz" Sorry you feel that way. guess you should have read the Trainzwebsite before you bought it as it states clearly that it is a virtual model railroad game. However, should you decide to keep the game you will be surprised at the prototype routes that will be created for Trainz. Just because tracklaying is different, don't think for 1 minute that prototyping can't be done. Real railroads don't go to a menu and select a radius curve and magically plop it down either. >like a game than a simulator.Uhmm.. the 'simulators' you play on your PC /are/ games. And if such game happens to be so anal, it forces you to use external application just to lay some tracks.. well, it doesn't make it's any less a game... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-24-01, 03:12 PM (EST) 8. "RE: MSTS & Trainz" You misunderstood his post. He uses TurboCad to draw up a track plan. He doesn't use TurboCAD to draw the track plan and then import the track plan into MSTS. It's like you draw blueprint before you build a house. Or maybe you scratch by hand a sketch of a bathroom before you build it. Some people do take the time to plan their work before they build it. In MSTS you have to lay the track but you don't use an external application to do that. Another for instance would be a music arranger who takes an idea, and writes out a score before he puts the actual parts in front of a musician. This is quite common. I myself sketched the routes before I actually created the track plan of my route. It does take a little more time but it gives you a reference to refer back to while doing the route. You'll find that many folks use this practice of roughing out a work before they make it actually happen. Just thought I would clear this up for you. Joe didn't mean he needed an external application like you thought, to do his track plan for MSTS. Hope this helps you understand the concept a little better and what can and cannot be done in MSTS. Dec-24-01, 04:35 PM (EST) 9. "RE: MSTS & Trainz" Ah, thanks for explanation. I've tried to use MSTS's editor few times, but it seemed so convoluted, i wouldn't be surprised if it allowed to import CAD data as template.... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-24-01, 05:25 PM (EST) 10. "RE: MSTS & Trainz" It would be neat feature if you think about it. Essentially, all the editor really is, is a platform to create the 3d world for you. So, say like a 3rd party would develope a better interface, the gist is, as long as it writes the files as it needs to be, anything can be done. Being that Kuju tried to do a whole lot in the first edition, chances are in the second edition, they'll focus much more on the smaller details like an improved interface. You see the same concept here all the time. Folks are uploading their routes before they are completely finished. The later versions, more is finished and the route benefits from it. I write software myself, and I have plenty of ideas I haven't implemented in the early versions that I intend to later on. So it's not a far fetched idea to want to have MSTS import a CAD type track plan. The nice thing about MSTS is, with some work, it could probably be done, although I wouldn't know how z data would be dealt with.Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-24-01, 08:00 PM (EST) 11. "RE: MSTS & Trainz" I am sorry the Trainz software did not work the way you expected. I guess my suggestion to be more patient with MSTS for your subway route proved to be correct one.I am enjoyng Trainz and MSTS.Good luck with your route.
