Dec-23-01, 10:56 AM (EST) "O/T: The Movie "Runaway Train"..." Hi all,
just saw in my TV magazine that they are going to run the above movie late on Dec. 24th. Anyway, in the announcement there is a photo obviously showing the locomotives which are supposed to haul that "runaway train". My question is, which types are these? The one in front is a Geep of some kind, I think, and right behind it is a F unit.Anyone know the movie and able to tell which locos these are precisely?Happy Holidays!

Dec-23-01, 12:19 PM (EST) 1. "RE: O/T: The Movie "Runaway Train"..." Hi all
Not a bad flick though how the train becomes a runaway is pure hollywood (IMHO Silver Streak has the most plausable senario, the tool box dropped on the deadmans pedal)
As for R.T's consist I belive they are Alaska RR GP 38 or 40,F7
and 2 GP 9's or 7's Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-23-01, 12:22 PM (EST) 2. "RE: O/T: The Movie "Runaway Train"..." Is such a "mixed bunch" of locos that realistic either...? I mean, a Geep, a Bulldog and two Hi-Noses...look quite odd together...
Not that I hadn't seen some odd lashups myself...such as a diesel-electric loco MU'd with an electric one...

Dec-23-01, 02:24 PM (EST) 3. "RE: O/T: The Movie "Runaway Train"..." Actually, it's not that odd a consist, particularly for the mid-70s, or the mid-80s in Alaska, though the arrangement with the F unit as the second unit was entirely a plot convenience. I've seen lashups through here that had a new CN SD75M, several GTW SD40-2s, and a GTW SW1200, so a GP40, an F, and a couple of early Geeps wouldn't be that odd.RDF

Dec-24-01, 01:45 AM (EST) 4. "RE: O/T: The Movie "Runaway Train"..." This is one of my favorite movies! One question though, the music for the closing credits, does anyone know the name of the piece? I know it's one of those old-time classical composers. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-24-01, 06:23 PM (EST) 5. "RE: O/T: The Movie "Runaway Train"..." It was an alright movie, but I wish we could have seen a train wreck at the end of the movie, not the locomotive running off into the white abyss.Behold The POWER of Black and Gold: THE RIO GRANDE RAILROAD Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-26-01, 06:06 AM (EST) 6. "RE: O/T: The Movie "Runaway Train"..." Here you go:http://www.alaskaaxle.de/pix/former-loco/DG-1500.htmlThere's a pic of the F7 used in the movie (I read somewhere that full size models were also created and used). According to that page, the lead engine was a GP40 and the other two were GP7s.I'd love to have a Runaway Train consist for MSTS with a smashed up GP40 The ending with the locomotive disappearing into the abyss followed by the Shakespeare quote is one of the things that separates Runaway Train from most of the rubbish Hollywood dishes out. A spectacular crash scene would've spoiled the opportunity to reflect on the themes of the movie. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-26-01, 07:08 AM (EST) 7. "RE: O/T: The Movie "Runaway Train"..." Mm-hm, the ending did surprise me somewhat. Considering how focused this Manny guy was on showing the director who was the boss, I would have thought he did not care a f*** for Buck and the girl in his quest. I'm not quite sure, however - did the end give us a clue whether the Geep would actually crash? I remember seeing the director handcuffed to a pipe or handrail in the cab and struggling to tear himself loose and hit the cutoff switch, and the last scene showed Manny standing on top of the engine, facing the wind, and the poor locomotive disappearing in the distance. Anyway, I wasn't quite sure during the first few minutes of the movie, but having seen it now I have to admit is is a good one.

Jan-04-02, 01:11 PM (EST) 9. "RE: O/T: The Movie "Runaway Train"..." Yes, a 'comtemporary classic' it says on the video box, and that it is. Eric Roberts is a bit over the top (as always), and the heart attack scene was quite 'hollywood'. But from there on, what a ride! The stunt scenes of the helicopter lowering the guy and slips and crashes through the windsheild. And Jon Voight failing onto the frozen MU hoses and getting his fingers crushed in the shifting couplers - it looked to real to me! Even the stunt guy as Eric Roberts trying to climb around the hood of the F7 is pretty amazing. I'm sure the odd consist was to make the story and action scenes that much more believable, as no one could get to the lead engine, until Voight's great 'leap of faith'.The music is done by (and now his name slips me...) Trevor Horn.
More of an 80's music pioneer, and in the most notable group The Art of Noise. But yes, a superb soundtrack none the less! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-04-02, 05:29 PM (EST) 10. "RE: O/T: The Movie "Runaway Train"..." I've seen the movie a few times, and have always wondered, why didn't they just go back to the third locomotive, and uncouple that?
sure, it'd have killed the plot...but achieved the same as the ending.

Jan-08-02, 10:31 AM (EST) 11. "RE: O/T: The Movie "Runaway Train"..." Thats exactly what i thought when i saw the movie.
it has been on tv a couple of times here in The Netherlands, and i've seen it five or six times. But i nevver get bored watching it.
PS. i think the end was perfect. Not every movie needs to end in a crash. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
