Dec-21-01, 10:47 PM (EST) 1. "RE: OMG at Windows XP!!!!" There's a site devoted to this.. don't know much about it though... I believe it's www.grc.comSomething about 'raw sockets' that until XP were difficult for novices to gain access to. There's a neat test you can try where the site will ping your computer and try to identify you. If I understand this correctly, you want your computer to be as invisible to the net as possible. In case the link don't work, it's Gibson's Research I believe.Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-22-01, 10:58 AM (EST) 2. "RE: OMG at Windows XP!!!!" Steve Gibson of GRC is a self-proclaimed "security expert and programmer" with no documented experience in either field. His claims about raw sockets and security have been debunked by most real security experts. Gibson has been frequently described as a nutcase in the computer press, such as The Register. The only thing he seems to be good at is getting headlines for himself. Dec-23-01, 00:22 AM (EST) 3. "RE: OMG at Windows XP!!!!" winxp is exactly like windows 2000 from what i can see. i havent had any security problems with it at all. if u want cheap crappy security, get winme or one of the win9x's. but winxp is built on windows 2000 which has some of the best out of the box security you can get.

Dec-30-01, 10:10 AM (EST) 13. "RE: OMG at Windows XP!!!!" What Svante said! I guess it drums up business for him! And the regular press is so clueless they just parrot this stuff instead of doing their own research and finding out how serious the problem really is..... ------Chuck Schneider---------

Dec-25-01, 11:51 AM (EST) 6. "RE: OMG at Windows XP!!!!" I don't think MS is hiding or denying it as they released a patch over the weekend to fix the security leak. I saw on other boards that beta testers had pointed out the problems and MS attitude was to release it with the weakness and patch it. Which they did.David Klemm

Sorry David!
But although MS claim the patch fixes the problem, it doesn't. So until the Software manufacturers catch up with it and release new firewalls that will block these unwanted machine accesses, it's been kicked the hell off our hard drives and win98 se and 2000 have gone back on! Best Regards,

Dec-26-01, 09:02 AM (EST) 8. "RE: OMG at Windows XP!!!!" LAST EDITED ON Dec-26-01 AT 09:06 AM (EST)I have ME and have no problems with security whatsoever. its supposed to have good security and performance. the performance with sound cadrs however is a very big load of crap. 90% of the things and games I have that have sound get garbled and staticy sound. but the security is good. all the people I know that own small bussinesses and large companys have ME and 98se. they have no problems or worries with either one. I can't believe that Microsoft is becoming so shitty with their programs. first MSTS with buggy editors and no patch and now XP with no security practically and a patch that don't do s@#t. guess they are becoming like everybody else these days. moneyhungary. they don't give a damn about us just how much we spend on their items. I say that the goverment should shut them down if they are going to make it easy for hackers to get at your files. thats just my opinion though. I could be wrong. just my two cents worth. Craig Shortino Making a huge PC virus to plant on hackers to your system. jk about that virus btw.lol. I don't even know how a virus. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-30-01, 01:38 AM (EST) 9. "RE: OMG at Windows XP!!!!" Hey Fozzy--got some links to the hard evidence that backs up that statement about the MS patch to the uPNP exploit not working? I for one am curious to see the results. You want to say the patch doesn't work, now let's see why that's true.I'm sick and tired of people who bash MS like it was the latest fashion in recreational sport, like bungee jumping or street luge. Hey, everyone's doing it, man, c'mon and say something sensational and deriding about Microsoft! It's fun!!! If you hate their OS or their other software so much, drop it. There are alternatives; anyone care to say why more people aren't using them? And don't tell me it's lack of advertising exposure--you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a computing website that makes mention of Linux or MacOS. What makes them so terrible that you don't want to drop big, bad, full-of-bugs-and-doesn't-care-about-security Microsoft for them, hm? I want details.Regarding security--If anyone here is so naive as to think your operating system--and that's ANY operating system, not just a Microsoft one--is going to be 100% secure right out of the box, then frankly you deserve to be hacked by whatever little punk with too much time on their hands targets your machine. If someone wants whatever information is on your computer and they want it badly enough, they are going to get it whether you are running Windows XP, Windows 95/98/ME, some flavor of Linux, MacOS, or DOS. Yes, shame on Microsoft for allowing such a security hole to slip through the cracks, but the common facts through all the stories I've read on the uPNP buffer overrun exploits are these: Microsoft releases XP with the hole, a research group found the hole and reported it, Microsoft announces the hole and releases the patch. At least they are trying to fix it. I do have a point to this rant--the security of your computer system, especially in this day and age of "always on" broadband Internet connections (like my own DSL), does not lie solely on the manufacturer of your operating system. The best they can possibly do is to identify the security exploits as they are reported and patch them as quickly as possible--as soon as someone builds a better mousetrap, the mice will just get smarter. The lion's share of the responsibility to secure your computer lies with you. Microsoft could release a magic patch tomorrow that fixes every known bug and security exploit in Windows XP, but if the end users don't download the patch and apply it, then it's worth jack squat. It's up to the individual users to stay informed of patches, keep their anti-virus or firewall software updated, or program the filters correctly on their hardware firewall. Sorry if the idea of checking for patches or AV/Firewall updates or reading up on computer security offends those of you who thought you could just take your computer out of the box, set it up, and never do any maintenance on it, but it's your choice--stay informed on how to secure your system and surf the Net happy or don't do a thing and just sit on your bum while waiting to download the latest SD40-2 repaint. And when you do the latter and wake up one morning to find the SubSeven trojan residing in your system folder, installed by a 12-year-old amateur hacker, don't go trying to find some clever new insult to throw at Microsoft because you think it's their fault. That being said, if you are looking for a decent firewall, McAfee VirusScan 6.0 (~$40 US) includes a rather nice software one that's easy to set up if you don't like to manually set up filtering rules. And oh yeah, it's WinXP compatible. I can't make comments on either Zone Alarm or the Tiny products, but I've used both the McAfee and Norton software firewalls in the past and never had a problem with either one. If you don't mind spending a little more money, the hardware firewall/router combos are coming down in price--I just picked up a Netgear one myself for ~$90 US, others like the SMC Barricade or the Linksys can go for even less. http://www.dslreports.com has a couple of free tests available if you want to check simple things like which network ports are open on your system, or if the potential exists to make a remote connection to your hard drive. Bottom line--don't sit around waiting for someone to come up with a perfect OS that is 100% secure out of the box; educate yourself on what you can do to secure your computer. And if that means you make the choice to use a non-MS operating system, then more power to ya.Mr. FRailfan, MSTS fan, Train-sim.com aficionado, and WinXP user since beta 2 Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-30-01, 09:28 AM (EST) 11. "RE: OMG at Windows XP!!!!" I wouldn't totally rule it out....they do make MS Office for MacOS after all...but there's more than a few people at MS who'd have to get over their little hangup about Linux being a "threat" to them in the OS market before that happens. Dec-30-01, 10:07 AM (EST) 12. "RE: OMG at Windows XP!!!!" >Hmmmm... wonder if MSTS for Linux will hit the shelves in this millenium.... You would see it right after Trainz for Linux is released. Nothing is stopping any software developer from releasing general applications for Linux now . . . except for a lack of a mainstream market. There is nothing inherently more secure about Linux except it's relative obscurity. Any OS that has the popularity and major acceptance that Windows has, would be targeted just as severely by would be hackers.

Dec-31-01, 04:18 PM (EST) 16. "RE: OMG at Windows XP!!!!" Red Hat Linux and Mandrake Linux are the two operating systems that have the most security alerts reported to CERT. Windows 2000 is in the middle of the list with the same number of alerts as Sun Solaris. The security of Linux and insecurity of Windows NT/2000/XP are nothing but myths.
