Dec-21-01, 03:15 AM (EST) "New CPU" LAST EDITED ON Dec-21-01 AT 03:40 AM (EST)I am soo excited! I had a new processor on my Christmas list and I've been checking in to what I could do with my crappy old emachines 366 celeron. I was kind of bummed when I found out I could only go to a 533 celeron, and the guy at the computer stor said they were getting hard to find. Well I found one on line for only $30. Figured I didn't have anything to lose! Switched it out last night and I can't believe the difference!!!! I've been running it today at 1024 X 768 X 32, with object and textures set to the right (Haven't moved my visibility from the basement yet...that's OK though, a little haze adds "atmosphere".) I'm getting better frame rates now then when I was running 800 X 600 X 16 with everything in the middle )except visibility, og course).Everything looks so awesome now! Still get fps below 10 out the front window in heavy texture areas or with lots of consists on the tracks, but the norm is 20-40 fps. If 170 MHZ is this big of a deal, I really envy you guys out there with the P3's and p4's. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-21-01, 09:19 PM (EST) 1. "RE: New CPU" I don't want to get a big mess started, but did you attempt to overclock your CPU? A lot of the ability to overclock the CPU depends on the motherboard. I don't know your ablilty to work on your PC and as such I have to discourage you if you are not comfortable with such a task.I have a Celeron 300a pushed to 450Mhz. It's very stable for my operation and will be adequate for my MSTS operations until I find work again and assemble my next box.Boomer Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-23-01, 11:47 PM (EST) 3. "RE: New CPU" I've seen a few articles on overclocking, but am not sure of all thats involved, and what the possible ramifications are. If anybody knows of a good article or tutorial I could read to help me make a more informed decision, it's something I would definitely consider. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
