Hey guys just thought I'd post a gentle reminder(not aimed at anyone in particular)that with Christmas just behind us we are soon to have newbies innundate the forum as they grow bored with the default MSTS.
Lets go easy on them, remember we may be grizzled MSTS veterans now but we were once the newbies.
Some advice for newbies
1 It's generally considered to be bad form and will definately get you flamed by making a "build such and such for me" post.
You will find there are a good many folks here at Train-Sim that'll be more than happy to build a simple project(simple does not include anything steam powered)or skin a car or loco but the best way to do this is a "Can someone please...." post.
2 This pertains more to the general forum but parts apply to all
A when asking a general rail related question, try Google first,if no luck finding the info then post here.
B It is OK to ask more than one question in the same post provided they relate to that forum(example you have 3 livery questions and 1 MSTS question, post the 3 livery questions in the skinning forum and the one in the MSTS forum) some of the people who've gotten in trouble have posted all their questions in seperate posts taking up space that one post would have covered.
3 Try to use the best spelling possible and the Kings english,I understand that for some posting here english is a second language(or not a language they speak at all) this is not to say "Speak proper American dang it" as the problem that caused some of the flame wars were people for who english was their native tounge and you still needed a moron to english translation guide,If we can't decode your spelling we can't respond to your question and internet elite speak is right out,we ain't internet elites and use of elite speak will get you flamed.
4 There is no such thing as a stupid question,as stated above if you've done a simple Google search and come up empty, ask away.
If there's something about MSTS you can't quite figure out,ask away.
We were all newbies once.
Anyway welcome aboard and enjoyGary S

Good post. I hope both sides can live up to the request. We were all newbies once, and although it is easy to right them off now, we have to remmember that they are new to this, and the more info we can give them, the more fun they will have.Chris Bogley

RE: A post for newbies and for us MSTS veterans as well

It kind of occured to me when I noticed more posts stating that they were new and figured it would be best to post a few pointers to smooth the rough spots. In addition to the pointers above....1 Check the FAQ page on this site if you got a question first.
2 Check the File Libray search feature.
3 Don't post "Trainz rules MSTS sucks" type posts(and the same goes for MSTS rules posts as well,It's OK to mention the competion in a legitimate comparison question but the Trainz VS MSTS debate has a tendancy to become a holy war.
4 Don't be afraid of the Route Editor,Activity Editor etc. they don't bite(usually).
5 If you do decide to try to wrestle any of the editors to the ground or get brave enough to edit an eng or wag file(or any file in MSTS)the following are words that can save your sanity...BACK UP!!,BACK UP! BACK UP!! if you have back up copies of any file you are working on any thing bad that happens is not a disaster.Gary S

Nicely summed up .Not wishing to be inflammatory but..."Try to use the best spelling possible and the Kings english,"Since many members write American English should that not be put in? I hate to have mis-spellings such as "color" "theater" "center" etc. called English, they are American English.--

Now see, in America we call it English. We call your English 'UK English' but... it is all English. Also: color, theater, and center are not mis-spellings.Although I am an American and spell things 'colour' and 'theatre' I still spell 'center' that way. This is a place for people of all nationalities, just because we Americans don't use UK English doesn't mean it's wrong. So: in the UK they call English 'English' and we call yours 'UK English' (if we're being picky). But you call our English 'American English' and we call it 'English.'French fries are called fries, or 'frites' in France... it's a similar localization here with many words.I don't know if they even have French Toast in France, or what they call it if they do. >French Toast in France, or what
>they call it if they do.Tim + French Toast = Uh-oh! My best advice, do not write in machine code, ie; b4, ur, etc. That just plain annoys me!!!

Gents
Didn't intend to give short shrift to any other sim out there, nor to come off as Amerocentric(is that a word?) simply used the the Kings english line as a more interesting way of putting that particular bit of advice, heck the person responsible(I won't name screennames but most off us know of whom I reffer) for that bit of advice seemed to be a US citizen but one would have been hard pressed to understand his posts.(Hay wood u bild sumthing for me, wat doo i doo.... etc)
If I inadvertantly offended then I apologize.Gary S
