Need some help; CD drive gone wonky – image 1

LAST EDITED ON Dec-16-03 AT 01:09 PM (EST)

Last night, I uninstalled MSTS (due to certain program errors), and started to reinstall it, but it terminated the installation due do a "cabinet error". This is not the first time something like this has happened, starting from a few weeks ago, when I have installed other programs from CDs, it either ceases due to intall errors, or errors crop up un the installed program, especially involving large or compressed files. These problems have gotten progressivly worse. I don't think this is an error with a Windows operating file, as installer programs run from the hard drive work fine, all pre-installed programs and games run as well as they ever have. Inexplicably, if I copy files off the CD using Windows Exploder, there don't seem to be errors (admittedly, I havn't copied many files this way recently, so I don't know for sure if that method is indeed error free). Now my question is: Does my CD drive need replacing, or is the problem elsewhere. I would really like to know this before I go out and waste money on a new drive. Thanks...Jonathan Nikiforovs.

RE: Need some help; CD drive gone wonky...

I will echo on the cleaning of the disk and the drive. Not sure about cd drives , but on dvd drives most manufacturers recommend cleaning of the laser lens at least once in every 8-12 hours of use, cd drives are probably the same, Also how old is the drive? If it is old you may want to consider replacement.Good Luck
Joel

The drive is a 2 1/2-year old 8-4-32 speed CD-RW drive.
BTW, I already tried cleaning the CD's (using a felt cloth and ethyl alcholol, as I always do). Besides, it's not just doing it with the MSTS disk, it's doing it with every disk, regardless of how clean they are. I also take every effort to protect my disks from scratches (such as storing every one of them in jewel cases). I'll head out to the computer store to get the supplies, and then give cleaning the laser lens a shot...Jonathan Nikiforovs.

Okay, I just installed a new 52x32x52x speed CDRW drive, and whenever I try to run a setup or executable off the CD, I get a "this program has performed an illegal operation" message. I need help...Jonathan Nikiforovs.

Wait, nevermind, I fixed it by disabling DMA in the drive's hardware profile...Jonathan Nikiforovs.
