According to the General Code of Operating Rules:5.10 MarkersA marker of the prescribed type must be displayed on the trailing end of the rear car to indicate the rear of the train.5.10.1 Highly visible markersDisplay a highly visible marker at the rear of every train as follows: From 1 hour before sunset to 1 hour after sunrise When weather conditions restrict visibility to less than 1/2 mileDoes this mean the FRED only needs to be flashing as prescribed in 5.10.1 or do different railroads always have it flashing?
End of Train Devices (ETD or FRED) have a light sensor that automatically turns on the flashing red light. When it's dark, the flashing light is on, when it's bright outside the light off. Usually if weather conditions restrict visibility to less than 1/2 mile, then it's dark enough for the light to come on. There is no manual control of the light.PatchCrew UP Engineer
