OT : Saddam Hussein 'arrested in Iraq' – image 1

LAST EDITED ON Dec-14-03 AT 05:40 AM (EST)

Looks like the US army have finally found what they long, long waited for!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/3317429.stm Saddam Hussein 'arrested in Iraq' Ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has been arrested in Iraq, according to unconfirmed reports. He was detained in his ancestral home town of Tikrit, official Iranian news agency IRNA quoted Iraqi Kurdish leader Jalal Talabani as saying. The US Defence Department said it had no confirmation of the report. Saddam Hussein is the most wanted man on the list issued by US authorities but has not been seen since Baghdad fell to US forces in April. Intensive search A spokeswoman for US-led coalition forces in Baghdad said that a "very important" announcement would be made at a news conference at 1200 GMT but would not give further details. Nazem Dabag, representative in Iran of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) also said that Saddam Hussein had been arrested. Saddam Hussein has been the subject of intensive searches by US-led forces in Iraq but previous attempts to locate him have proved unsuccessful. On 22 July his sons, Uday and Qusay, were killed in a raid by US forces in the northern city of Mosul.

Although I was not sold on the war in Iraq, this is still a day for the whole world to celebrate (if it is indeed Saddam).

RE: OT : Saddam Hussein 'arrested in Iraq'

Considering that last week there were reports from frontline Iraqi soldiers stating that WMD's were delivered to the front and that they didn't use them out of fear of US response and reports that Saddam is being very cooprerative I imagine that this will in short order put paid to the "there were no WMD,Bush lied" crowd.
I did see Kerry making the rounds of the morning news shows doing the "it's great news but.." routine but you could tell in the back of his mind he was doing the"sonnuvah bi...Dubbya skunked us" bit.
BTW Am I the only one who thought the only thing Saddam was missing was the bottle of Maddog and the "Will be brutal dictator for food" sign? Gary S

Iraqi soldiers reporting the existence of WMD's, the capture of Saddam Hussein, the US tax cuts apparently working big time with the economy roaring back strong with the stock market climbing and all financial indicators going up sharply.Very bad news for Democrats, I'll try to lay off of them during their very sad time.

It's about time! First George Bush tried to get him during the Gulf war ('91) and could not get him. Now his son, George W. Bush got him this time. Job in Iraq is not finished yet. The forces still has to get the rest of the top aids. We still have to get bin Laden yet.............his days are numbered. It's just a matter of time before we get him, too. Ken

First Apparently the side of truth and freedom by your logic is that in support of a brutal dictator and perversed truth and perversed freedom is to act to bring said dictator to justice, interesting you wish to side with (apparently) Saddam's regime and then complain when called on it,when one lies down with dogs one gets up with fleas.
Second
In response to your first question, copied from the rules thread....
This was the part that you quoted and are making a federal case of "The General Forum is for everything Railroad Related. You can post about train sightings, other simulators out and about the internet, such as Microsoft Train Simulator, Bose View Express (BVE), Auran Trainz, Train Driver 3, Black 5, Train Dispatch 3, Rail 3D, Playstation 2 Rail Games, and for the fun of it, your Sim City Railroad etc."This is the part of the rules you oh so casually forgot to bring up..."National Events, such as what happened on September 11th, Volcano Eruptions, Major Earthquakes, Tornados, Hurricanes, etc. It is ok to post about this on the forum."One would think that maybe the capture of the man responsible for millions of deaths in Iraq during his tenure as dictator, major supporter of terrorisim world wide might qualify as National Events.
In light of your "perverse truths, perverse freedoms" comment I'm going to take a guess that you were and are opposed the actions taken by US,UK and other coalition forces and that your "what sim does this have to do with" comment is about the only way you could come up with to show your case of sour grapes. Just because I descent from your views or thows of the majority on hear dose not meen that I support Saddam. I have a RIGHT to my view just as YOU have I right to yours, how ever if you like the rest of sheep wont to jump from “forum CoC” to “support of a brutal dictator” then that’s your look out, perhaps my point was a subtle “I am sick and fed up of pointless OT post subjects that are no good to the forums, and promote pointless discourse and verbal back slapping”If you wish to hide behind “National Events, such as what happened on September 11th, Volcano Eruptions, Major Earthquakes, Tornados, Hurricanes, etc. It is ok to post about this on the forum”
Then how come >10% of posts are in relation to my “forum CoC coments”, do I rank as a “National Event”? or dose the capture of a “brutal dictator” NOT rank as a “National Event”? There for a pointless OT!b101uk

When you make the claim that the actions of the US in regards to Iraq are perverse truth and perverse freedom I can only take from that that you thought that no action should have been taken, by no action being taken therefore Saddam stays in power.
If I misconstrued your point then I apologize,You do have the right to your opinion but I also maintain the right to point out if you are in the wrong and no,you do not qualify as a national event, you did however invite said respose from us "sheep" when you took it upon yourself to begin quoting forum rules about what was acceptable posting while disregarding the latter section of said ruleGary S

RE: OT : Saddam Hussein 'arrested in Iraq'

I strongly resent the suggestion that being anti-war amounted to being against the rule of President Saddam in Iraq. Any suggestions to the contrary is right-wing propaganda. The man is a war criminal and should be tried in accordance with international law.On the real issue, the reason the war was wrong is not because President Saddam is a tyrant; there are plenty of them around. Rather the disadvantages strongly outweighed the advantages.WMD have not been found yet. Iraq was complying with 1441 when the USA and Britain illegally invaded. There was no UN resolution sanctioning war.

Agreed with your assertion of what should be done with ol Sodamn(but you've got to admit,it is fun to yank b101's chain)but the Iraqi people should be the ones to try Saddam,as they suffered under his rule for all these years plus under the international court the worst he could get is life, under the Iraqi courts he could find himself on the business end of a firing squad or looking at a long drop on a short rope, either choice a fitting punishment. As to Saddam complying with 1441,if that were the case then war would have been averted but Saddam figured he could jerk the UN around and his business partners in France,Germany and Russia would pull his rear out of the fire, alas not the case he failed to meet the demands of 1441 and the serious consequences promised were delivered.
1441 gave the allies the go ahead,we went back to the UN to give France and company a last chance to get aboard before the whoopass express left the depot.
As to the WMD, I expect now that the spectre of Saddam some how returning to power now gone that should loosen a few lips as to what became of his stock piles.Gary S

Ok for the Economy, does anyone know what time it is? Its the Holidays, the Economy always goes up during this time of year. It takes months to decide if an Economy is improving, not weeks.

He supported Saddam and is anti-american (since Cretin is gone I guess that being American includes Canada again just like the rest of the last 100 years - Since Cretin apparently didn't want to be American but French)By the way the Railroad simulator referred to in this thread is the US 4th infantry division... Just ask Saddam about the "train" that hit him LOL!People like b101k and his ilk are now $hitting the bed...
Since Saddam was dragged from his hole like a rat from a trap!
I would love to be a fly on the wall of the inner offices of Messr Chirac, Herr Schroeder and Comrade Putin (yeah I know but he is obviously trying to bring the USSR back and is a KGB Officer by trade so let's use the correct Honorific)....
Since all reports have Saddam "cooperating" with his US and Iraqi interrogators (yes the Iraqis are getting a piece of that action too according to reports and statements by the interim gov't) The afore-mention Troika of Dead-Enders must be pi$$ing in their pants over the kinds of things he may be telling us (about where the WMD came from and Went, The amount of Bribes they took from Saddam to support him, etc ad naseum!) This is almost the best part....Guess this really helps out Howard Dean and the rest of the 7 Dwarfs doesn't it? Bush wasn't my original choice for president (John McCain was) but IMO he is doing a fair job and has really grown into it.... I just love the arrogance of the socialist elite in the mass media and hollywood and the liberal party who just insist on underestimating him, no matter how many times they are proven wrong... The best re-election Tool Dubya has IMO is the Democratic Party and the 7 Dwarfs running for president over there..... The best of the lot is Joe Lieberman and he just doesn't seem to get any traction with the "True Believers" and John Kerry's proven war record (he is a genuine hero) seems to be a liability among the liberal elite who are embarrassed by guys like him. The rest don't matter....Prediction: Saddam and his henchmen will be tried in Baghdad in an Iraqi court by Iraqis (after all they are the ones most aggrieved with over 1/2 million dead in over 400 mass graves) with international assistance (and maybe participation by others who were afflicted by him such as the Kuwaitis and maybe even the Iranians/Persians who gassed over a million of) and with all the trappings of Nuremberg (and similar results one hopes - I believe the top Nazis were hanged and rather poorly at that since some of them choked to death - it seems the Career NCO executioner "misplaced the knots and miscalculated the drop so their necks did not break" Poor dears) Prior to the US election and somewhere between now and then we'll probably turn over which ever particular stone covers the rat hole Us-ama went down also....I wonder why Chirac, Schroeder, Putin and the rest of the axis of weasel (supported by the pacifists and cowards) are yelling for Saddam to be sent to International Tribunal at the Hague instead of being interrogated and tried in Iraq? Do you think they are trying to control the "product" of those interrogations? Chuck Schneider

RE: OT : Saddam Hussein 'arrested in Iraq'

First of all, let me say that even though I opposed the war, I am still glad and delighted that Saddam Hussein has been captured.Congratulations to the US Forces that took part in that raid. Now, to reply to a few of the insulting remarks in your post.I would love to be a fly on the wall of the inner offices of Messr Chirac, Herr Schroeder and Comrade Putin.......The afore-mention Troika of Dead-Enders must be pi$$ing in their pants over the kinds of things he may be telling us (about where the WMD came from and Went, The amount of Bribes they took from Saddam to support him, etc ad naseum!) This is almost the best part.... I'll leave the French out of this for now, they surely have eraned their reputation for being a 'dictators suipplier of choice'. After all, french Mirage fighters were in use on both sides during the Iran-IRaq warI openly admit that Germany sold equipment to Iraq. A second deal was stopped, according to my information. There were a number of criminal law suits about this in the first half of the 1990s.On the other hand, Iraq reveiced a lot of support from the US during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s, and there are numerous sources that the Mustard Gas and ohter nerve agents actually came from the US. IRan was Americas No. 1 enemy at the time, and any kind of ally was acceptable.
I wonder why Chirac, Schroeder, Putin and the rest of the axis of weasel (supported by the pacifists and cowards) are yelling for Saddam to be sent to International Tribunal at the Hague instead of being interrogated and tried in Iraq? Do you think they are trying to control the "product" of those interrogations? Most certainly not, at least not Gerhardt. I'm not so sure about Jacques (chirac) or Vladimir(Putin). Please note that the deals with Iraq I mentioned above took place during the reign of Chancellor Helmut Kohl, and his CDU, a concervative party that would NEVER do anyithing concerning foreign policy or weapons deals without US consent. So most likely the US knew and silently approved what was going onConcerning the part about the International Tribunal at The Hague, I am convinced that the Tribunal is the right place at least for the atrocities commited during the Iran-Iraq war. It was a crime commited by one independent country against another independent country. This is just the kind of situation the Tribunal was created for. I find it most interesting that it is the US, which still does not recognize the Tribunal. It makes you think that it is the US who have got something to hide.

Uhh.. No, they weren't. Iran's planes at that time were solely US-supplied.. Douglas F-4 Phantom IIs, Nortrop F-5 Freedom Fighters and Grumman F-14 Tomcats. Iran got some F-7s (Chinese version of the MiG-21) late on tho. The only Mirages in the Iranian inventory appeared after 1991, and were Iraqi planes flown by defecting pilots, which may have been taken over by the Iranian Air Force later on.

Maybe in the US North America has been shortened to America, but in Canada they are still two very different terms and your average Canadian would shudder at being called an American. No offense to the US, but we're just not Americans, we're North Americans. But let's not let any small disagreements take away from what has happened today, a great monster has been brought down (and I do congratulate the coalition forces for doing so).

Chuck you convienently forget that pres. shrub's invasion of Iraq was and still is illegal, not that international law ever bothered you. THAT little matter ever stopped the US of A from invading small countries...remember Granada? Now there was a REAL war, huh? If you were so humanitarian minded, why not invade North Korea, China, or many other countries in the world that are ruled by despots. Actually I still think that describes your georgie-boy, but a matter of opinion. And don't include Canada in your country, we are separate from you, thank God, and just have the misfortume to share a continent with you people. The world will, one day be rid of gw shrub, and will utter a collective sigh of relief at the last of him. I think his main claim to fame, other than securing the Iraqi oil fields for good ol' Exxon, et al would be he learned to read while in office. The capture of Saddam Hussein means only a propaganda coup for the white-house gang. They couldn't care less about the Iraqis, other than like any other US conquest, what they can be used for.

Ernie, I think you are asking for a big-time smackdown, but of course NDP twats like yourself always seem to like stirring up trouble...
Now you ask why the US does not invade those other countries if it was so concerned about humanitarian aid? Simple: It can't, especially not in the case of the PRC. North Korea? yes the US could probably crush them, but you see the DPRK is now believed to have nukes, plus it has hundreds of heavy caliber artillery guns within range of Soeul, South Korea. Besides, humanitarian aid was not the pretext of Gulf War II anyway...Although Bush is far from my favorite President, I'd much rather see him in office than Klinton, along with most of the candidates the Democrats are fielding now (the only one who I really consider "President Material" is Joe Leiberman, but his campaign is not doing very well right now). The Democratss are going to lose this election for the same reason that the Republicans lost the 96' election: Most of their platform consists of attacks against the incumbant, and several of their key issues against Bush have been stripped away.
In fairness, I'll still say that Bush's communication skills could use alot of work...Now, I see you don't like having the Americans on the same continent as you? So, why don't you move to somewhere else, say...France?
For the record though, I can't think of any other country I would rather have as Canada's neighbour than the United States.Jonathan Nikiforovs.

Actually, we never actually tried to get him. That war was only to get Iraq out of Kuwait.>We still have to get bin Laden
>yet.............his days are numbered.
There are a lot of caves in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and wherever he is, he's well protected. Supposedly he was having kindney problems, so he might be dead already.
Question: Why didn't we finish one mission (bin Laden) before starting this last one (Iraq)? There will still be troops out there because we need to help the Iraqis set up a government. So don't be putting up that "Mission Accomplished" banner just yet. There's still work to be done. But maybe we can pay more attention to the fact that New York City still hasn't gotten the $20 billion it was promised, and the Republicans were going to have their convention on a cruise ship so that they wouldn't have to actually go into New York City. The Democrats will probably choose their candidate the day before election day, at this rate. This is why most Americans don't pay attention to elections. But I'm really glad for the troops, the Iraqis, and the nation. Hopefully everyone will be coming home soon, and no one else will be shipping out. I'm giving all the credit to the military, as they were the ones who got him.

While hearing over the BBC News 24 live feed, here's some interesting points from an interview : Saddam did not put up any resistance, even he had weapons with him. No bullet was fired in the capture. Saddam had a pistol with him upon capture. Why did he not choose 'honour'? Wouldn't he reflect to his loyalists as a 'coward'? Would he be forced to declare that he has weapons of mass destruction from his interrogate (whether it is true or false), therefore securing Bush and Blair's re-election?

Hell I'm suprised we still have him alive. I mean the US forces could kill him when they've found him and no one would complain. Congraulation to the US Troops who found him, Congraulation (a small part) to Shrubbury, although I think he could've handled this War on Iraq better. Now, where do I line up to beat the living sh*t out of him? I have a mace that I need to use!!!!!! LOL!

Nah Sean,
The most effective pictures IMO were of a US Army Enlisted Corpsman (medic) manhandling him and examining him for head lice and suicide capsules in his teeth and mouth....
That is especially humiliating in the Arab world and to a leader like Sadaam...
One could only hope that the Medic was Jewish for the final Irony!
And Saddam is shown docile accepting it too!
Hell he didn't even draw his pistol let alone use it... On himself or anyone else. Lots of courage there... He looked like a drowned rat pulled from under a pier!So much for the Vaunted Hero of Arab resistance to American Hegemony!

I really think that the Iraqi people should tried him, and hopefully execute him. So Chuck, did you ever check out the Jet Blue stock I was talking about in chat?

RE: Mr Blair's re-election.It presently looks like the Labour party http://www.labour.org.uk , led by Mr Blair will win an historic third term in office. The official opposition, the Conservative party http://www.conservatives.com was pro-war (apart from a few notable exceptions) with little difference between them an the pseudosocialist New Labour government. Opposition did come from the third party the Liberal Democrats http://www.libdems.org.uk (who all voted against the war whilst notables in both main parties rebelled), as well as the nationalists of both Scottish http://www.snp.org and Welsh nationalists http://www.plaidcymru.org . Of those not represented in the House of Commons, leadership of the anti-war movement came from socialists and communists http://www.stopwar.org.uk , but remember 1m people marched against the war in London - most of those (including myself) would not self-identity as communists. For completeness, it is worth mentioning that the far-right neo-Nazi BNP scumbags also opposed the war.for an overview pre-war positions see: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/2860135.stmLabour will win the next general election in 2005 or 6, probably with a reduced majority. The predictions are that the Tories will take seats off Labour, but they will also lose to the LibDems. (The tories have a huge problem opposing a government that steals all their ideas and pushes them to the right). So Mr Blair is safe and can do what he likes, and will probably retire midway through a third term in which case Mr Brown is favourite to take over.

Excellent news indeed, and congrats to the troops who captured him. While Saddam's capture may not reduce the insurgent attacks, it's still an important milestone. If his capture leads to the discovery of WMD's (which I'm still convinced existed), then so much the better. I hope the Iraqis get to pick a nice, fitting sentence for him after he's tried, considering he's responsible the deaths of several times the number of Iraqis than the Iranians, the Americans, or any other country combined...I am surprised he was taken so easily though, especially since he was armed. Maybe he was so surprised by the troops bursting into his "spider hole" that he he was unable to react in time? Even though I always expected him to be found eventually, I believed he would try to go down in a blaze of glory like his sons did. On another topic, the Palestinians (many of whom celebrated on 9/11 and when Iraq dumped Scud missiles on Israel during Gulf War I, and consider Saddam their hero), have lost their precious sugar daddy, as well as their faith in him, since he allowed himself to be taken so easily (Read here). An interesting side note about the capture operation: It was called "Operation Red Dawn", and the search objectives of the operation were designated "Wolverine 1" and "Wolverine 2"...
